What type of plant, schrub, tree is this?
« on: July 17, 2014, 04:14:43 pm »
Hello, I'm in SE Virginia near the coast and I have a ton of this stuff in my backyard. I spent a long time looking online to identify it but no luck. The branches are smooth and straight and would be perfect for an arrow if the wood is acceptable for arrow construction. Anyone know what this is?

The pictures you have, will be more helpful, with the picture of the plant also. ;)

Privet or honeysuckle.

Looks like Chinese privet, it is very invasive and makes good arrow shafts.

Practically anything will make a serviceable arrow.

I agree with Marc. Cut appropriate shoots, bind them together and give them a month or two to dry and give them a try.

A pic of the whole shrub would help, but it looks like privet. Privet makes good arrows if you can find clean shoots without a lot of twigs on them.
