dry heat bending

can someone link me to a good tutorial on dry heat bending? My bellies are cracking when I do it, I'm assuming because I 'm heating too fast? Its all been trial and error

If you're using a stave my first guess is that your wood is still too green.

I'm currently working a privet stave, but all the bending I've tried so far is on board bows

I rub a good coat of crisco on it. Never worked privet. Some woods can't handle dry heat. I believe it works better on an oily woods. I believe there is also exceptions to that as well😁

Depends what kind of bending you want to do.  If it's recurves then it's best to use wet-heat.  If it's heat-straightening or reflexing then the 2 vids here http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,23338.0.html might help.  They are about heat treating but the idea is the same

I've gotten a little more adventuresome with dry heat.  I've bent some pretty good curves with it.  No oil, but it's really touchy.
