If you are going North, the hike from Damascus Virginia to Harper's Ferry,West Virginia is suppose to be one of the best hikes. Damascus is pretty much the AT party center or most friendly place on the AT.

Danger can be any where along the trail from crazy people, but my guess is there are fewer on the trail than in the city...
