With Tru-oil....

I'm sealing an osage knife handle w/ tru-oil and am wondering if I do not hit it w/ the steel wool after my last coat will it stay glossy? Also if I want to put a coat or two of mineral oil/beeswax over the tru-oil, like they say to use the gun stock wax, should I hit it w/ the steel wool first? I usually don't like a glossy handle, but this knife looks slick w/ the glossy handle. What's my best bet? Opinions? Gonna start the sheath tonight, hope to post it by Friday night and carry it to the Scottsburgh shoot on Saturday.

I think true oil give a "glassy" gloss look,  I personally like a hand rubbed wax gloss on a knife and gunstocks.

I have put beeswax over Danish oil .
never done it with tru-oil always used gunstock wax.
I don't care for a super glossy handle myself .
but I have done a few and used super glue.
5-6 light coats sanding with 400 grit between coats then sand final coat to 800 wet and hand buff with flitz plastic polish.
when done right I will look like glass.
its a pretty durable finish unless ya drop the knife on concrete and crack or chip the finish.

You hit the tru-oil with the steel wool and then apply wax.....I think that is what You were looking for...Makes a nice finish.

Thanks guys, mohawk, not sure what the second and third word of your reply is, but I think I get the jist.

Like I said, I don't like a glossy finish either, satin/flat for me, but I've got three coats of tru-oil on now, sanding w/00 steel wool between and it looks really nice. I figure it will dull up w/ use, but for now it looks nice glossy. If I decide I don't like the glossy I can always flatten it.

Yes it will stay glossy. I like to rub it out with a polish after the last coat though, makes a better feel in the hand and better look. I actually use just a simple car polish.

Cool Cool, thnks TMK! Turtle Wax? I live on a 2 mile gravel road, don't wash or wax much, had a buddy leave som turtle wax here after using it on his Mcycle gas tank.
