kanuka selfbow
« on: February 04, 2014, 03:11:22 am »
Howdy folks, this is a great site and i have learnt heaps off you guys so thanks alot.
kanuka [kunzea ericoides]/ white tea tree is a medium density hardwood tree native to new zealand and a member of the myrtle family. The wood is strong and hard and seems to have good elasticity. Early maori used it for tools and hand combat weapons.
This bow had some prop twist and a knot, the knot has a wiggle in the side profile. I tried to remove both with dry heat with moderate success. The knot ended up becoming the top limb. The bow is smooth drawing and nice to shoot. She is 61 n to n and pulls 46lb @ 26in.
cheers.

Thanks fellas. The photo is taken from a bit of an angle, but the top limb does have a bit more reflex.

Awesome!
Talking trees. What do trees have to talk about, hmm... except the consistency of squirrel droppings?
