tiller check - shorty
« on: January 07, 2014, 12:04:40 pm »
46 1/2" ntn osage. Jon W sent me this quite a few months ago and I've been slowly and carefully trying to get it right.
Don't want to mess it up, especially since he did most of the roughing out and saved me the heavy lifting work.
In the full draw shot its being pulled to about 21- 1/2" and I want to take it to 23". This is the shortest bow that I
have attempted so far. If it wasn't 12 below outside I take it out a shoot a little at the shorter draw to see how it feels before proceeding with any more wood removal but that may have to wait a few days.
Appreciate any comments or advice on tiller so far. Thanks , Greg

That looks pretty good. If that bow was mine, I'd remove a few scrapes right at the bottom fade. Looks like a bit of a flat spot. Looks like there could be a knot there, too.

Hey B2,
Your tiller looks very good....so far. I believe that a few scrapes on the outer 1/3 to bring the tips around just a tad. Your bow is gonna be a screamer and a smooth draw to boot. You will find that allowing the tips to come back just a bit will NOT decrease your draw weight, just give you that last 1-2 inches without killin the inner limbs.

Please don't get me wrong, your tiller is perfect and I'm sure the bow will easily go to 1/2 bow length. Also that it's real hard to do that last little scraping to fix a problem that aint really a problem. But just a very few scrapes and that puppy will amaze you. Just one old guys opinion. That bow would please anyone who built it so don't take this as criticism, more like a small suggestion to give an already damned fine bow just a bit of an edge.

Id say the bottom is flawless and the top is a bit stiff half way.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies guys.

adb: yeah there is a knot and swirl at bottom fade, I worked that area yesterday to get it moving a little and fear
thinning it any more there. Maybe just a couple more scrapes would be safe.
Rich: always happy here to get any advice or criticism from you. The last 5" of each limb are a tad thicker, I'll proceed
slowly on a little wood removal there.
Chris: I'm seeing that also in the upper limb, feeling the thickness taper I'm thinking I should remove a little at top
from just about middle of limb toward tip a few inches.

Have to head out for awhile, I'll try and finesse some bend in it tonight and see what comes out of it.

JMHO, Top limb looks stiffer from here at center. I like the camera it allows you to fit the tiller to your draw, and gives you all the time you need to look...Better than a mirror

Looks really good Greg.  I do see a little stiffness in the upper as pearly did mention :).  I need to make one of those shorties.

I agree with Bubby, I'd get a few Arras thru it - You are very close My Friend ! Cool profile - really likin' these shortys. Bob

You got plenty of good advice Greg. I'm with the old guy (Rich). I would shoot it some and maybe work the end of the limbs to get an inch or two of draw. Man that thing looks killer to me. The handle setback worked out good, I'm really glad I put that in there now.

I'll get out a throw a few arrows thru it at the shorter draw then to see how it feels before proceeding. This is some nice osage you sent me Jon, taking far more of my abuse than I would of thought it could. Thanks again man for giving me the push to make a real short bow.

You got skills Greg, don't think all that sweetness is the wood. The more I look at that thing the more I like it. You have fallen prey to the dark side now bro.
