I have a friend that so dislikes cleaning his that he wont shoot unless it is a trophy type buck .
He went 6 years till he dropped the hammer and the deer !
That was 3 years ago so it is most likely not been shot since .
Not me I will shoot me a squirrel or ground hog with out hesitation because I enjoy cleaning my guns  !
A patch and ball will do all you need Chris , them maxis are for over the 3oo yd mark

I enjoy cleaning muzzle loaders myself. Ill try both types of bullets Guy, Im sure either will work just fine at 50-60 yards.

I have shot 425 gr conicals out of my 54 cal from day one,  a few round balls too.  Went to a 200yd range with a buddy of mine who shot his high power rifle, and he was amazed how after a few shots with my old 54, I was lobbing in some rounds into a six inch bull.  I love my double/set trigger set up.  It's fun to shoot.  Over the years I've knocked a few does over backwards with it.

ya D Bear them big guns pack a wallop for sure, no Grizz around here so I see no need for that much gun !

Long distance shooting is were you find out what you and your gun are made out of
Over 500 yds for the big bores and over 300 for small bores
As a young child the neighbor man shot long distance front stuffers  in competition
They started at 300 yds and went on out but the barrels on them bench guns were 1&1/2 inches across the flats some maybe more, many were under hammer cap locks
I have seen a lot of stuff in my life for sure !

Hey, where's your rear sight.? Just noticed that. My eyes are to bad anymore to use open sights so I went to a peep on mine. Good eyes or bad, they're worth the extra green.   Art

Kiddin', I just put a set of Williams Fire Sights on it. The back was gone when I got it. It was $50 for a TC rear sight, or $38 for a pair of made in Michigan sights.

I use the William's fibre optic front sights along with the peep sights on my Thompson, love it! Other that that I build my own fibre optic front sights. I groove out the front sight and super glue a piece of the fibre optic on. Works great!

I saw an original "chunk gun" with 1 3/4 wide barrel in 40 caliber.  The barrel had dovetails every couple inches from the back of the gun to almost halfway down the barrel.  As the shooter aged, he had the rear sight moved forward!!!

For my last gun, I set the rear sight on the top flat of the octagon barrel and lined it up with my eye.  I kept sliding it forward until everything came into focus.  That's where I cut the dovetails.

Never had the privilege of young eyes , Glasses as long as I can remember .
I guess I would shoot instinctive now a days
I remember the days when a halo on the front sight made a big difference,and we would get into the girls fingernail polish to brighten up the sights , the for runner to the fiber optics you speak of I guess ! Hot pink or pearly white were the best options then but with the stuff the kids wear today there would be all kids of wild options 
Glad to see things don't really change much !
