Help me out boys
« on: August 15, 2013, 03:13:17 am »
I've only dabbled in knapping I live along the lower Columbia river. I find the occasional small agates and what not well Ive been fishing a new beach and I found alot of this green rock and I tried to get some flakes off and it work..... A bit.
What do you pros think? Knappable?

I see some cones in there.  It looks cracked up though.  I think I would definitely beat the crap out of it with something and find out.  :)

looks like some kind of chert to me. made when the Juan de fuca plate and Pacific plates subducted under the continental crust. typically found in some for in the coast range.

Bryce: not sure what that is, but if you want some crystal clear agates. Cross the river and go to the Grays river, North of Naselle. Hit the gravel bars and that stuff is all over. I have never tried to knap it, kinda figure it's as hard as any other agate. Ed

Well Ed we might have to meet up sometime before the 24th and you can show me the area if you don't mind? I would love to try knapping agate.

Some day we may have too meet, I'm not sure I can make it down there anytime soon, been running with kids, getting ready to go back to school. I'd like to try that rock also, it may need to be cooked. Ed

Let's take a trip to mile marker 77.  We can stop and see Keenan too.
