buckthorn sapling bow
« on: June 22, 2013, 07:03:24 pm »
I know I've been posting alot lately so I hope you guys aren't sick of seeing my bows. I've been busy making some and Im only showing you the ones that didn't break, which is about half of em'. ;D ;D

This is a 54 1/4" ntn buckthorn bow from a 1 1/4" sapling. Width at handle is 1 3/16" and its pulling around
47# @ 25" after about 450 arrows shot thru it in the past 3 weeks. High crowned sapwood back and mostly
flat heart belly. Bottom tip at natural flipped profile and top tip heat bent to match. Top tip had pin knot that
cracked while bending so tip is reinforced with narrow strip of rawhide glued to belly there and sinew wraps.
Rubbed in some finely ground earth pigments on the back for color and as you guys know I almost always
like to add a little painted design to my bows and these were also done with earth pigment mixed with glue.
I love this buckthorn as a bow wood.
ps; drawn photo is short of 25" because I broke two recently while holding to long at full draw for a photo.
So from now until I don't feel jumpy anymore I'll only have full draws pics when the wife gets the
      timing down.
Thanks for looking: Greg
I ain't broke but I'm badly bent.

Very nice bow. It has that distinct slight swing in the limbs, as most of your bows do.  :-*
Buckthorn must be good stuff, it's kind of small and thin.
Oh, and that magic painting is real unique.
Don't shoot!

Really Greg, how many bows does a guy need anyhow? :o Seriously though you know we are looking to see a new bow every time we open this site up so don't stop posting ever. That looks like a real sweet shooter to me. I need to see if I can source me some of that Buckthorn. I love the color of that stuff.

How'd you get it to dry without it checking to the pith? did you dry it in the round?
