Plains Style Blunt Game Arrow
« on: May 11, 2013, 10:28:24 pm »
I just finished one out of 5 Lakota style game arrows. It's made from rough leaf dogwood. It is 24 inches long, and a little over 3/4 of an inch at the blunt end. I've got a lot of wood to shave to finish the set.  Curtis

I'm not sure if these will be big enough. It's become dark outside, so I'll have to get photos tomorrow if these don't work. I tried to crop them in their original size. The nock is flared, and two sides of the blunt end have flat spots on them. I painted the flat areas red. I've seen several Lakota arrows that had the sides flattened. They could even be flattened on four sides to make a square end.
I usually use wing feathers, but I haven't had any problems with the tails. My subconscience may have kicked in and told me to save the wings for pointed arrows. I hadn't thought about it!?! CC

Awesome blunt!  Can you post pics of the dogwood pieces you are starting with?  I take it these are splits you are reducing down and not shoots?

Yesterday was my first time to shoot one with an end this big. It shot great! The largest original ones I've been able to find are about 1 1/4 inch diameter. I'm not sure if I cut any sticks large enough to make one that size. If not, I'll make some larger one's next year!

Okay, here are a couple of prospective blunts. I also re-painted my original blunt this morning. I think I like the red ochre color better.  CC

with that much weight up front you really shouldn't need much -if any- fletching
in order for those to go where you point 'em.

looks great btw!
something else to add to my to-do list..

They have turkeys in North and South Dakota, Minn. so I am sure the Souix could get turkey feathers!
