I'm scared!
« on: May 09, 2013, 11:07:41 pm »
I am pretty new to primitive archery and stuff, I am in the middle of making my second Osage selfbow and I am afraid it is gonna break in my face when I draw it back. If the back is gotten to one annual growth ring, and the bow is somewhat tillered correctly, what are the chances it is gonna snap when it gets to full draw? The stave has been in my shed for 4-5 years.
Thanks,
Jack

Can you post a few pics of the back of the bow and the side profile?  Maybe we can head off a catastrophic failure and leave you with something shootable!

I'd say it is very unlikely that a clean osage bow would break unless it had a violated knot or pin, or some other malidy. You can always add a temporary cloth backing for protection and remove it later after the bow is tillered.
  Like the others said, pics can help us make a determination about your bow.

Well, are you tillering on a rope and pulley pr a tillering board? If it breaks while building it and you are across the room it is not likely to hurt you. If you are underneath it on a t board and it beaks there may be other consequences.

My rope and pulley is portable...at least in my cellar.

Check my site.

Nah it won't snap 'in your face'
If it breaks the broken end is still attached to string at the nock...
It wil pivot up and over whacking you on the top of the head.

So that's alright then ::)

After breaking more than 20 since I started bending ,I advocate safety glasses!I have the odd ding here and there but no more so than trounching through the bush!when I was just a little plumber my journeyman would say "No guts,no glory"!words I still live cautiously by today.most time the bow will speak before a massive falure if patience and attetion to detail are applied.
Some like motorboats,I like kayaks, some like guns,I like bows, but not the wheelie type.

And seeing how the Muffinman wasn't much to look at in the first place, no biggie.  Now he's still not much to look at, but at least he has character marks.   >:D  He's one of those people that you tell his perspective blind date that he has a great sense of humor.   >:D >:D

Safety glasses are cheaper than eye surgeons.

+1 Pearl Drums.  Had a violent explosion on a Hickory backed Black Cherry board bow a few years ago.  No damage to my person, but my psyche was bruised for some time as I short drew everything for months.
