Right now it's about 40 inches long, it has not gone to the ends... the crack in the ipe is about 9"

Those are both drying checks. Very common with bamboo (and why I don't work with it anymore) but not a big deal. Not good with the check in the ipe. Any way you can narrow the entire bow? Ipe excels being narrow. How deep does the check go?

Yep drying checks.
To make sure this never happens cut your lams just over-sized then keep them somewhere dark/dry etc for at least a month to let them reach equilibrium. If you don't this can happen and even if you get no checks the glueline is compromised.
In the boo the check is only cosmetic. As a bow is drawn or any material is stretched it tries to narrow itself (think of a rubberband). So any check is actually being pulled together on a bows back.
The ipe is one of those were you can fill it with superglue and fine ipe dust....then cross your fingers when tillering. If it makes it through tillering then put a wrap around it for insurance.
Good luck.

Thanks for the input guys, how narrow  can I go with it?, it is at 1 1/8"now...and in the future would hickory be a better choice for backing?

Hickory / bamboo it makers very little difference - it's about learning how to utilise the materials you ARE using to the best of your ability! Don't think oh I can just change this for that and all will be well, figure out the best way to use what you have.
Width depends on draw -weight but i've made 90lb elb's an inch wide at the handle.

Did you do the glue up yourself, or did you buy it from someone?
