Cherry BOMB!!!!
« on: September 05, 2012, 04:27:12 pm »
Still fairly new at bow building and until today I felt that maybe I was doing something wrong??? I have build 26 bows and haven't had one blow (in my presents....  my neighbor Bob's bow broke but I had shot a least 100 arrows through it before I gave it to him).....   Well I finally feel like I belong :) I was getting pretty close to a finished tiller when....  Boooooooooom!!!!!  scared the Kaaaa-rap out of me :) The whole time I was working on it it felt exceptionally stiff and the physical weight was very light. I even backed it before my final tillering. I did some heat straighting and maybe that did it. I didn't think a piece of wood could be so loud!!! Glad I've got a half dozen bows in progress,,, back to work....

Sorry you lost that one Coaster and after taking the time to back it too, ouch.
I know that loud boom. Elm bow about  65#, floor tillered and tried to get stung for the first time on short string in the basement, in the
dark. Problem; I was stringing it backwards. Man that echo was loud in the dungeon.
I ain't broke but I'm badly bent.

Oh my! By the looks of that break, it didn't give any warning at all!  I would say you were long overdue for a little start.  Now get back to work on the next one! >:D. Josh

That really bits. So you think the heat after backing made it fail?
I'd still be cleaning my shorts if that happened to me.

I got the stave roughed got it bending a bit then used dry heat to straighten and even up the reflex in both limbs. I then added the rawhide so I'm not sure what made it blow. it was bending well and the tiller looked good....  the Boooom :)

Oh well Next!!!!

I could be wrong and anyone please correct me if I am but I am guessing that the cherry was too dry.  The heat treat may have taken it over the top. I had a cherry a couple years ago blow on me too. It was a hickory backed glue up I did and the board I got from a friend had been stored in his attic for some time. My thoughts at the time were it must have been too low moisture content because as I studied the remains, they sure were awefully dry. It could be that I had some grain run out too but I don't recall that being what caught my attention.
