Can you see any good bow wood? Lotsa pics
« on: August 09, 2012, 04:21:36 am »
Howdy,  I just got back from a road trip through north west Nebraska.   I stopped and took some shots of the scenery occasionally, just to illustrate why I didn't succeed in becoming a bowyer as a lad.   Now in all truth I picked my views.  After all I was traveling along the north edge of the Nebraska National Forest.   The signs at the state borders boast that Nebraska is the "Home of Arbor Day".    Which maybe explains why My aunt has memories of being part of a WPA project in the 30's that was planting much of the afore mentioned forest.

A pleasant surprise when some bucks walked out of a railroad cut.

Good grief! It looks like a moonscape compared to my neck of the woods.  The absence of trees would freak me out.

You aint kiddin' there! We need to cut trees down just to get around up here. I would still give my left one to hunt that land and those deer.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

Jackcrafty,  That does look nasty, though the eastern part of Cherry Co and the western part of Keya Paha Co in Ne suffered a huge range/ forest fire just a week before my visit.  That area wound up looking a lot like your pic.

Killrduck,   Well it does look something the same, doesn't it.

Seabass,  The older fence posts are nearly all western red cedar.   They make an OK arrow, but not bows.  The newer posts are all pressure treated pine and they're not good for much, but keeping the barbwire off the ground.

Sonny,  A walk in the woods is good, but being able to quite literally see for miles is grand too.
