special bow

Once upon a time, there lived a boy in a house with his mom and out front of that house was a giant ash tree, the boy grew up and went to college and his mom got remarried and tore the house down to build a new bigger better house, but in the process the tree was also cut down, fortunately the wood was all saved and sawn into wood for my grandpa who is a furniture maker, since then many beautiful things have come out of this wood including a 12 ft long dinning room table and many other pieces of furniture, most of these things i will probably inherit (hopefully not for a long time) but id really like to make at least one bow from this tree, im going to visit my grandpa over labor day

i just was wondering what yall think i could do to make this bow special?

It's already going to be special isn't it ?? ..considering the story of where the wood came from.

..maybe get your grandpa to take a few scrapes on it in order to add some of his Good
Medicine to the bow.
otherwise you'll have to decide how to make it special.

i appreciate the advice guys i was already planning on making it with my grandpa, after all he has shown me about woodworking id love to show him what little i know about bows, plus he has a band saw

i just cant wrap my mind around what kind of bow to make, i just don't want to look back and say well i wish we had done that, and at the same time we only have one weekend and i may not get another shot at this

Make a nice 1/4 sawn ash backed ash flatbow. Easy peezy and durable. Make it 64" ntn, 1 11/16 wide fades then pyramid to 1/2" tips. BOOM ya gotta sweet piece of ash to remember forever. Use TBIII to glue it together. Wait 20-24 hours and tiller it out. Start with a 1/2" core and 1/8" backer.

This should be a very special bow. I think I would check out Steve Allely and Jim Hams, books on Native American Bows, and make a bow appropriate to your area. I'm sure it will be a great bow what ever you decide make.

whatever you do im sure it will be great and memorable. my great grandfather passed when i was about 10 and passed down to me was his tractor, his only rifle, and woodworking hand tools that he got from his father, rasp, draw knife, ect. and i use them on almost ever bow that i make.

maybe you both can, not only build the bow together but both of you sign it.
