Cant melt steel in a fire..think again!
« on: April 25, 2012, 11:07:02 pm »
I wanted a more efficient way of heating steel,so I buried a 3/16x3" steel pipe with 1/4 holes drilled in it under my fire pit,I attached my shop vac blowing in reverse to that sucker and look out!! I would of never thought it would get hot enough to melt steel, but it did!! I had to find out the hard way tho...I melted the handles off of 5 drawknives >:(,I mean COMPLETELY GONE!!!!   The blades(what was left of em')had  what looked like pools of lava on the bottom facing sides. Add breaking My favorite hickory bow this morning and dropping my cell(hence no pictures)in the drink yesterday to my list of high lights for the week! I may not even get out of bed tomorrow!

I wanted to harden them all back to back,I've done it before, just not with the new 'Blow Torch'!! Needless to say I was a little peeved but I shrugged it off with the help of a little V an C...!! I woke up this morning and jumped right on the replacements with the determination to make even better knives, lemons to lemonaide I like to say!!

Yep, that charcoal can get dang hot, especially with that much air blast.  Might be better off with a hair dryer on low or a squirrel cage blower.
