Wood id request, 1st try at pics
« on: March 01, 2012, 11:35:05 pm »
Hello all, was at a logging site today and scored this log, knocked over by the equipment.  I think it is an ash.  Thanks all.

I would tend to agree with you, but my last attempt to id a tree from bark pics cost me a bow.  So please forgive me if I remain noncommittal.    ;)   Josh

Ash would be my guess, however, there is absolutely no dark core wood--which doesn't mean anything. It might be a young tree or a different kind of ash from what I've cut.

Hrothgar, The tree was only about 5" at the base.  Correct, no dark core, just a central pith about 1/8 diameter.

Did you get any pics of the branches or buds? It is real hard to ID trees from the bark.

Does look like ash. If so, the buds would be opposite. Whatever the species it seems pretty straight and even. Nice log.
