i just bought a piece of red oak from home depot so i could make a board bow. i have not made one before then i realized, do i have to get to one continuous ring on the back of the bow?

IF the grain orientation will allow it, sure!  Chances are it won't!

Your biggest concern is the grain run-outs.  Didja check out Jawge's webpage?  It's got a really good tutorial on how to pick a board.

If you are facing more than one runout per limb you may want to consider backing it.  And backing can be as simple as bworn paper bag and wood glue!  Just something so that the back of the bow is one continuous piece of material.  If you have good grain, with little or no grain runout, red oak may survive unbacked.

There are soooooo many fabrics better than burlap.  Burlap is just woven treebark, little or no strength, open weave, lotta weight for little return.  You can use any thin cotton fabric such as muslin, or even light weight canvas.

If you have a local thrift store, go there and pick out two of the ugliest silk ties you can find and pick out the stitching.  Great bow backing!  Very unusual!  Save any that have a hand painted tiger or hula dancer.  I will send you an aged bowstave for that!

Good choice.

Offer stands for a handpainted tiger or hula dancer on a tie.
