I'm not sure if this is in the right category, but Tree id???
« on: February 03, 2012, 09:22:39 pm »
I'm terrible with tree id. But back behind our warehouse at the office, they cut this tree down and I helped myself to a few. I couldn't tell you at ALL what the leaves look like, unfortunately. The only thing I know about this tree is that at the base, there were many "trunks" of about the same diameter. Help?

I appreciate it!

It's really pretty light. As to hard or soft...to be honest I'm not sure how to tell the difference. I'm still new to all this, especially tree id. I should note that I live in North-Central Texas, if that helps.

I know I shouldn't even comment, but 'Popular'?

I'm guessing smoothbark sumac, but its very hard to see if there is a pithy center or not.  Josh

That is it. Someone recently posted a bow made from this in the last couple weeks here. Would have never tried it, but after that post,I may have to reconsider.

hmm, it does have a faint odor. I'm not sure I'd call it "funky". Though after being in some of the houses I've been in, installing cable, I may have an entirely different definition of that word than most.  ;D

Thanks for the input, folks, we'll see soon what kind of bow they make anyhow.
