New Point
« on: January 27, 2012, 07:46:12 pm »
Finally got off my butt, went camping at Edisto Beach SC, and did some knapping this past weekend around the campfire. Here is a photo of my first point for the year. Light billet work but mostly pressure flaked from a slab of Flint River GA flint. 5" long and 1 1/2" wide. Enjoy, Rick B

Mullet, I got the slab from an older gentleman in LeGrange GA. I was at a rock dig there at the Hogg Mine and I spotted him selling some rock and knapping. I travel with my gear so I sat down with him and turned out an obsidian point while he was working on some Flint River. He liked the point I made, showed it to a few people, and said "here, try some of this Flint River and see what you can do with it". He gave me some pieces of it to try and I promptly went to work on a piece of it. Got in a hurry and snapped it in half trying to work around some cortex. Made a nice point out of one half though. JimBob, wife and I camp alot at Edisto Beach State Park here in South Carolina. I walk the beach looking for fossils, shark teeth and artifacts (pottery/points). Most afternoons I'll build a campfire and work on some rock.
Curt- I'll be there at your get together for sure. Stretch it out to 2 days this spring? Rick B

Cool stuff, we always used to go camping up at Carolina Beach, NC.  I always had a good time.  Its been a while since I have been there and I hear that you now have to have a membership to get on the beach.

Hey Curt;
Are you gonna make the Dade City knap-in this year? It's gonna be a big one with a 1840 Rendevous also.
