I would guess that your thumb fits in the depression on the back, with your fingers curled around the pointy end

A piece of wood you whittled up last night to keep a bunch of rednecks in suspense.

Used to straighten cane arrows after they are heated by rubbing it agianst the cane where it needs straightening for compresion? Or, a burnishing tool used to burnish wood say as in Bow backs and bellies?

Is it a cam or a 'dog' ,like I would use to tighten a sinew cable on a cable backed bow?
That would explain the opposing curves.

As Jamie would say "ding, ding, ding a weiner uh I mean a wimmer uh a winner !"
Thats what it is . Its called a "FID". Ancient ones have been found that were made outta ivory and walrus tusk. It was a normal tool fer ancient eskimos ta have one with their cable backed bows. It increases the tension on a cable backed bow by twistin so as ta get a higher draw weight. When finished with bow you untie the string on cables and untwist cables with "fid "ta relieve tension on bow.
