JackCrafty, I have watched all of your vids and I'm a big fan :)  I was wondering if you could tell me where I can get the delerin rods so I can make some tools like yours. I have had alot of problems with direct percussion so maybe your technique would work better for me. I'm in Del Rio btw, if you ever want to get together and knap please let me know.

Ryan, I get the plastic rods from a guy on ebay.  I can't post the link here...but you can do a search on ebay for "UHMW Plastic Rod".  You will see various pieces.  The ones I use most often are either 3/4" or 1" in diameter and 10" long.

Del Rio.  hmmmm....you're about 4 hours away and it looks like Ozona is half way between us.  Maybe we can meet there for some knapping.  Do you know anyone in Ozona?

I'm sorry, I dont know anyone in Ozona. My inlaws live in comstock, thats as far out as I normally go. Im sure we could find somewhere in ozona tho to sit down and do some knapping. Do you just drill a hole in the plastic and slide the copper wire in? Or do you use some kind of glue to hold it in place? My cell is 330-321-1836. Feel free to call anytime and maybe we can set some time to meet.

Yeah, I just drill a hole in the end and insert the copper.  No glue.

I wrote down your number.  I'm going to a knapp-in in Odessa this Saturday but maybe we can meet the weekend after this one.  I'll look for a spot for knapping and keep you posted.

Thanks for the key words to ebay, I just got a 3/4" and a 1" plastic rod. What size copper wire do you recomend for each one?

I just made a rod like Patricks and the largest solid copper wire I could buy was 4ga.  I drilled my hole in the rod too large for the wire.  To get it a little larger diameter I bought a hard copper 1/4" copper pipe  and soldered the 4ga wire inside it.  So far it's working well.  The other end has a #12 copper wire in it.

Skippy, I use 1/4" solid copper rod on one end of my 1" dia. percussion flaker.  The other sizes I use are wire sizes you can buy at the harware store.
