Let me introduce myself (bow pics added)
« on: June 16, 2011, 10:12:44 pm »
Hey!

I just wanted to take a moment and introduce myself.  I don't know if this is the forum to do so, but some may find it rude if I don't do an intro and just start replying in forums.  I'm from Lansing, MI and I'm on my ninth year building bows and arrows.  My main "thing" is making osage selfbows but have recently gotten into bamboo-backed ipe and massaranduba bows.  I also do some free-lance trumpet on the side.  I'm looking forward to interacting on this forum instead of just "lurking."  It's good to see some of the same people from other sites.

Take care n' God bless!!

~John

Today I just finished a bow to be delivered to a young lady at Comptons this weekend.  It's bamboo backed massaranduba, 66"ntn, 38#@28".  Hickory handle lam, cowhorn tips, and my first attempt at a Strunk-inspired handle wrap.  Let me know what you think!

I met you last year at Elm Hall. You and your wife were the only ones in our group with self bows. She was kind enough to take her shoes off and gather all our arrows on the island shot. Nice to see you here now John. Im sure we will run into each other again soon! Welcome

Here's picture proof of the incident Pearl speaks of:

I made her a bow and now she comes to most of the shoots with me.  I'm such a blessed man!
It is God who arms me with strength
   and keeps my way secure.
He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;
   he causes me to stand on the heights.
He trains my hands for battle;
   my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

Thanks, Gordon.  I've learned a lot by studying your posts and pictures.  That bow was a quickie, so I'm not perfectly satisfied with the tiller.  As far as the handle, I didn't get it quite right, but the next time it will be easier.  I've learned a lot.  I'll be posting more soon! :)

 A welcome from me over here in Wales UK,  looks like you're making some fine bows,  Bamboo backed ipe..... my favorite combination. Wouldnt mind to try some masaranduba but havent come accross any yet.  Do you think it is better or worse than ipe/
