sapwood osage questions
« on: April 07, 2011, 11:40:27 am »
Got some fresh small diameter osage limbs - besides splitting and sealing the ends, how do you handle osage you plan on keeping the sapwood on? Also, any tricks/problems with making a sapwood back osage?
Thanks, Postman

Of the osage that I have left the sapwood on, I usually cut it when the sap is high, peel it like a nana, let the moisture dry off the back  for about 30 minutes to an hour, then seal it with at least 5 coats of good shellac, making sure that every coat is dry between.

BTW, most sapwood saplings will draw into some extreme reflexes, so be mindful.

Thanks guys - probably will try some kids' bows and  a few shorties in there with 1 or 2 sapwood rings. These are limbs off a log I cut, didn't want to waste. Try to get some pics up this weekend
