Greetings All,

Could anyone help me identify this type of tree. The latewood is very dense and has tight growth rings. Thanks, Mossy

Could be of the prunus spiecies,
But the again it does look like elm when it has been freshly cut and split.

You don't happen to have some pictures of the leaves or buds, do you? That would be really helpful.
Does the wood have a smell? If so, can you describe it?

Darksoul, No i dont have any pics of the buds or even limbs. There is a small stand of these trees I will check out more this weekend maybe get a few more pics. The wood smelled a little like oak to me after being split. The wood is very dense and hard. I'm new at this game and appreciate any help I can get. I've been hunting/shooting laminated traditional bows for over 20 years now, and visiting these forums now got me pumped to try make a self bow. Thanks, Mossy.

I may very well be wrong, but I don't think it's an Elm. I don't see much of a darker stringy cambium layer just under the bark, like I've seen on White and Red Elms. I am interested in knowing what it is though.

If you can try to take of the entire tree from a short distance. It's overall shape might give clues to it's ID.

buds twigs and whole tree shots would help a lot.

I'll  try to get out in the morning and get a few more pics of the standing trees where I collected it. The top of the tree I cut is still there I'll get some pics of the branches too. There is probably half dozen of the same trees in a little stand where i harvested it. I really appreciate you all helping me out, Thanks again.   Mossy

if the canopy of the tree is still layig there
look for buds on the twigs,and take pics of them too  ;)
