feathers cutting my hand does it make a difference?
« on: March 07, 2011, 04:12:57 pm »
Does it make a difference in a feather cutting your hand when you cut the feathers final shape with scissors or burn it to final shape? Hope this makes sense thanks

Don't you like staining the arrow shafts with blood?? ;D
I trim the leading edge of the quill realy thin with a sharp knife and then glue the tips and sometimes wrap them down. Sometimes you need to turn the nock a bit so the fletching clears your hand better. I have less trouble with 4 fletch. Yesterday I stained a shaft pretty good though ::) ;D looked close at it and the start of the feather had some fletching glue soaked and dried into it.......nicked me pretty good. I have been using cut feathers not burned, I wouldn't think there'd be much difference there.

Josh, I wrap the forward end of all my fletching. This helps a lot. I also started using floppy rests on my bows and this alone would do the trick.

I like to thin the quill down a bit and then bevel the sharp corner on the top side. I also bind the fletches, or at least get the front.

Like the others said.  After I burn the feather to shape I then shave the leading edge of the quill as fine as possible and wrap with sinew then glue down.  With this I can shoot off my finger with no bleeding.

Mike, my skin has gotten so thin in the last few years it doesn't take much to break it. Since I first started using a floppy rest it hasn't happened. Still almost feels like shooting off my hand.  ;D

I trim the leading edge like others and also roll it down with something round and hard like a screwdriver, then usually rap and glue but not always, the first thing I do is feel of the leading edge if someone gives me an arrow of theirs to shoot,if I feel any burs I don't shoot it. ;) ;D
been there done that and don't like it. :o

Not the best looking floppy rest but its just a piece of leather that the arrow rests on

No problem I have also used thicker leather for kids bow, I rip it down a little thinner where it attaches to the grip so it conforms to the shape of the wood look at the far right grip (sattle leather) floppy rest
