what glue for antler tip overlays?
« on: January 21, 2011, 09:57:44 pm »
Hi all,
I'm finishing up a couple of refits, narrowing tips and such, and adding tip overlays to take advantage of some really narrow (for me  ;)) tips.
What do you use to glue on antler?  Will TBIII work?  Or does this call for epoxy?  I'll be filing nock grooves on the backs of these overlays.
Your insights, as always, greatly appreciated,
Frode

The one time I used Titebond II was an abject failure, went to 2 part epoxy with good luck.  Have also used the thicker super glues as well with good luck.

Gel SG or epoxy; TB2 or 3 works for wood to wood only!

Two part fishing rod epoxy. I use the slow set as it's stronger. Any fly shop on the web carrys it.

I used TB3 for antler on osage and they are still going strong after thousands of shots. Maybe I got lucky?

I use a good quality rapid epoxy, no probs, there's not much stress on an overlay anyhow.

Thank you all!  Now I just have to see if I can get the antler bits cut to shape  :P.

I've used gel super glue, 2ton epoxy and TBII, TBIII, all with good success. I have had a few overlays pop off but from each type of glue so I'm sure it was my fault.  If your antler is pithy on the glue surface saturate with thin super glue, let it cure, sand that surface flat and glue it down to the tip. The pithy antler seems to soak up the super glue and starve the glue joint if it is not sealed first.
