Hide Glue?

Can someone explain how hide glue is made or point me in the right direction?

I've made it before from both hide and sinew scraps. Cut them up into small pieces, cover with plenty of water, and boil for a little while, then simmer until it's done. Usually takes several hours of simmering.

Progress might have been all right once but it's gone on for far too long.

When it cools, does it "dry up" or retain a thick, sticky, gloopy consistency?  Am I right in thinking it stays sticky and can be reactivated by heat?

Yeah, Ya cook it down a bit, take out the scraps and let it cool. It will solidify and you can then store it ( I like airtight containers )  where the critters can't get to it. Re-heating turns it back into glue.  I have used rawhide dog chews to make glue before. You can sometimes find a big bag of them cheap at dollar stores or such places.
