Further reduction ? (update)
« on: October 20, 2010, 07:39:38 pm »
I took this piece of kekouk down to preform an have since taken it down to a 6to1 ratio. Its 2x5 by 5/16 an a lot of front to back healed fractures or some type of inclusions, should i chance it an thin a little more or play safe an notch it. Any suggestions on point style would  be appreciated. On my last set of percussion thinning some of my flakes stopped at healed crack, need to come from oppisite edge an try an go past healed crack, Most flakes ran by but I think I also was getting a slight case of yellow wrist an wimp hitting it :( Anyways pretty thin for this ole guy. looks good to me like it is.

don't hit it any more..
Use your ishi stick to thin it more. Thin it from the base with some hard pushed presser flacks with your ishi. The will aid in notching.
Looks like it would make a good lost lake. and if your notches stall your have a big Keokuk Hernando  ;)

HIT IT!  The only way to get to the 8-1, 10-1, 12-1 is to hit the 6-1.  I have given buckets of spalls, flakes and dammits to several people who post here regularly.  They can tell you that there are lots of broken preforms in there that were pretty thin.  It is the only way to learn if you want to get better.  You don't have to do it often, but you have to do it or you will stall where you are.  That's my opinion, I may be out in left field with a hockey puck trying to score a field goal in overtime.  Bill

He has alrdy taken it to a refind preform.
The stage 3 biface in the 1st photo is when the primary thinning should take place. I think if he was to try and hit it some more at this stage it would most likely brake. Or in the effort to get it thinner he would loose his width.
I have made some 12-1 turkey tail and when making those ya got to thin the fast from the get go, once the refind preform stage is reached its time to straiten your edges and notch.
What Bill said is 100% true if you don't try your never do it. I to have broke countless preforms and I'm sure I'll brake many more.
But in the case of the point at hand i think its to late to thin it any more with a billit with out the loss of allot of width.

I think if you try to hit and thin it more now, you will just get your flake to dive into the center and stall. I have a stack of preforms like that. I'd just finish it.

I'm thinking I would notch that one too Bob and as already said try thinning a little earlier in the game on the next peice. Or you can go for the hail marry and see what happens - it's your rock ;D.

Well, I decided to try an run longer flakes with ishi ,clean it up an notch. Flakes didn,t travel as far as liked  an overall did not come out as well as I was hoping for. Base still to thick an to many flaws to get long clean look. Now for the good things , notches stalled so I punch noched an got some scary results, huge c flakes that did get my notches to move, learned a lot an I think I need to get cleaner thinner preforms earlier in the game. Thanks for everyones input. Very much appreciated. Bob
