Calling in pre- pre-rut?
« on: September 27, 2010, 03:54:36 pm »
Quick question for you more experienced whitetail hunters:  Season here in Indiana opens October 1. As I understand it, not even the "pre-rut" begins on opening day. So if I see a big one out at 50 yards for example, should I try to use the call this early to call him in? Or would it likely backfire and spook him?

Thanks for any advice,

As soon as the velvet comes off the antler the pre rut starts. The rise of testasterone in the deers body is what causes the velvet to turn loose and gets the bucks thinking about other things besides eating!  ;D
I use a grunt call all season long. The closer I get to the rut the more agressive I get with it.   I have never had a deer spook fromm a grunt call. Sometimes deer will ignore it but usually it will get their asttention and in many cases it act to calm them.
