this is my first deer using all primitive tackle. I used a 60# sinew backed juniper bow, syringa arrowshaft with obsidian tip. I was shooting from a treestand and missed a couple of large bucks, shot over them. I had a trail camera that recorded many large bucks coming by. this forked horn is the smallest of the bucks. he came in with a couple of does and presented a slightly quartered away shot, the shot was high, but under the spine. I left and returned with my son a hour and a half later. I found my arrow a short distance away, only penetrated 8" and the tip was broken, I knew I had hit the backbone. there was a bloodtrail and the blood was bright. the deer bedded about 100 yds later, we were so intent on the tracks that we didnt notice the deer get up, after we found the bed, I noticed that the tracks seemed to be staggering , a short distance later, my son shouted " Dad, Look" and the deer was laying about 10 feet from me. the arrow had severed a major artery and got one lung, I found some shards of obsidian while field dressing the deer. this was the smallest buck that came by my trail cam, but he is large to me
this has been a goal of mine for a few years now, and it is amazing how hard it is. gives me a whole new appreciation for the skills of our ancestors.
