just an idea
« on: July 21, 2010, 10:22:46 pm »
read a post on homemade dowlers that used a block of wood with a sawzall blade clamped to the wood  next to a hole that had been drilled in it.got me to ah thinkin that 2 is better than 1. basicly u drill hole then cut right up to the hole then clamp sawzall blade to wood. u make two blocks like that then screw them one on top of the other with hole lined up to another board with a support block between top and bottom boards. just make sure to leave enough space on middle blade to let shavings out. make sure to drill hole in 3rd board it dont work well with out it ;D. i aint that good at writing so some of this might be confusing ???

Seriously, make sure you post some pics when you get a chance.  It sounds interesting.

The two blade jig is the way to go especially if you are using hardwood for shafts. The single blade works fine for spruce, Douglas fir and cedar.
The way I do it with two blades is a bit different though. I simply drill a hole the size I want and then Bandsaw just to the edge on either side. Then I clamp a Sawzall blade on each side in a vise (make sure the blades are facing opposite directions- one with teeth up the other down). Then I use a C clamp to secure the top part of the blades. Always use hardwood for the jig, softwood like pine simply leaves you with some friction charring and smokes a lot!!!
Here is a VERY crude drawing of how I do it.

this post has been driving me nuts; about a month ago, I came across a youtube video showing the exact process. It was fast, slick and effective. It was in russian, but you didn't need to understand the vocals; and the tags for the video used odd terms like pole instead of dowel.

I've tried searching for it several times now, but no luck.

The drawing posted above is just right, tho.

Go to you tube and type in,  "I make round stick with sawblade"  It will show you a couple of the jigs.

I've got some shafts that I need to turn this week so if I do get a chance to set it up I'll take some pictures.

that's exactly the video I was looking for.

here it is:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwDjedeJCZ0&feature=related

That's dude making a dowel with a vise, drill, chunk of wood and a sawblade.

He goes on to do the same thing with a pair of files, a band saw, a hand plane, and some other approaches.

I browsed through some of his other videos, this guy's got some nice techniques and jigs.
