white cedar
« on: May 03, 2010, 10:30:58 am »
A friend of mine has just given me a stave of Thuja Occidentalis (white cedar) under the impression that it was yew (well the bark is similar) Does anyone know whether this is at all useable as a bow-wood?

Cheers, Dave

I believe this issue came up a while back, where a former member cut what he thought was yew, and it turned out to be cedar. If I recall correctly, it's not bow wood, but of course makes super arrows. Red cedar is good bow wood, providing you can find  piece straight enough and without too many knots. Marc St Louis has made some excellent red cedar ELBs.
