Three maple board bows - pic heavy
« on: March 27, 2010, 03:02:48 am »
So a while ago I posted a thread showing off one of three maple board bows I made two weeks ago. Well here are all three together in a gallery of pics. The longest one is 68" while the other two are 66". They all draw approx. 50#@28". 4" handle with 2" fades. Limbs 2" wide to mid limb and then taper to 3/8" nocks. These were a blast to make and I thought they all had great tiller till I saw these pics. Two of the bows look as though the top limb is stiff in the middle. It never fails that I see tiller flaws in pics that I didn't see on the tree. Also one bow looks as though the bottom limb has quite a bit of twist. Eeek. I think tillering started off on the wrong foot because I started too thin near the fades. Over all I'm happy with these bows. I really don't want to seem like I'm trying to mass produce. I really put my all into each one. They look good, feel good, and are all hard hitters (IMHO). Plus, each one was good practice and a learning experience so hopefully my next bows will be better. Anyways, thanks for looking.  :)

Sorry if I posted the same pic twice. A lot of pics and they all look the same!  :P

Very nice.

I love the look of these.

There's something about the smooth, simple, elegant lines that really sings.

The craftsmanship on these is excellent, and makes me jealous ;-)

Can't wait to see more!

Thanks a lot everyone. That is probably my favorite thing about these bows. Just the beauty of simplicity. Thanks for looking.  :)

Nice job Ryan! Strong work mate. Maple is my favorite white wood. I'd have to agree with you... I also think the upper limb in the last full draw pic looks a little stiff mid-limb, otherwise your tiller is spot on. Out of curiosity... did you finish one bow before you made the next, or did you make all 3 at once? Cheers.

Nice work man. Those are all great looking bows.

Thanks for looking everyone. I have to say that since I've been making bows from maple, it's really grown on me. When I really think about it I feel like I haven't made many bows so when I try and say what my favorite wood is I feel like I have more to discover. Maybe in a few years I'll pic a sure favorite. Still gotta work more with osage and yew for sure.  :D
adb - I made all three at once in steps. First I roughed out each one on my band saw. Then I tillered each one. And I finished them all together.
