bow for 11 yaer old ?
« on: February 07, 2010, 08:41:29 pm »
Looking for dimensions for a kids bow. I have several woods available but was thinking of using a 1 1/4 wide 6 ft long piece of Hickory I have leftover from a build , 7/8 thick, is it possible?
 Thanks in advance,
Jeff

hey bud,
Was going to post no more bows, if you dont get any dimensions let me know and will send you some. You didn't mention draw length, draw weight, or such. Made my from ash but your hickory is a lot tougher so I know you got plenty of wood. I'll keep an eye on the posts.

What do you mean by that half-eye?

25# @ 22". Not real sure, it's for a friends son and thats Dads best guesse. He's a big boy for 11. I figure Hickory is pretty tough, perfect for a kid. Dads a traditional man and wants to start boys on sticks too!!

I'd try to build him a bow he can grow in to. My son is 11 and shoots bows that are 40-45# @ 28". Around 28-30# at his draw (24ish")and he wants one heavier but ol' dad won't build him one... yet. You should have plenty wood for a 40#@28" bow.

When it comes to kid's bows, my philosophy has always been... not too long and not too heavy. Try to keep the bow proportioned to the kid, and too much draw weight just turns kids off. If they can't shoot it comfortably, and hit the target sometimes, it's not fun and they lose interest. A 6' longbow for almost any kid is just too unmanageable. I'd keep the draw weight <30# as well.

n2, my son's bows are 58 and 60" stiff handled bows. My son has been shooting a bow since he was 3 though and that will make a difference. I agree with adb, keep it under 30# @ his draw.

Jeff,if you mean your stock is wide enough for a 7/8" wide bow, yes, that is plenty of width for a youth bow.I have hunting weight bows of both hickory and HHB that are only one inch wide(with no set, heat treated).God Bless

Thank you all for the replies, I feel confident now that the Hickory will work and have asked the father to measure draw length for me. This will be the first kids bow I have attempted and should be fun.
Thanks Half Eye for the specs.
I love this site!!!
