Hillbilly - I know we have some limestone mines or quarries in the area, but none of them are used for commercial purposes. At least not anymore, so they are hard to locate if you don't know where they are. I guess I am going to have to do some asking around.
Cowboy - I didn't know that it could be heat treated. Is that something you can do yourself or are the temperatures needed too high for someone to do in an oven? I guess I will have to look it up. I thought about trying to learn on glass, but as of yet, I have not come across anything that was thick enough. I was thinking about heading to the local dump and looking to see if I can find some glass items that are of a thicker nature than the bottom of bottles. Any suggestions on what glass objects are good to practice with? I read somewhere that old toilets would work if you break them into smaller chunks. Is that true?
Richpierce - I actually found this rock right along the edge of a stream bed. I forget where, but at some point, I had read that stream beds are good places to look because all sorts of rocks get washed down stream.
When you guys are out looking for chert, what is it exactly that you look for? Or is it one of those things where once you find it for the first time, it just kinda jumps out at you from then on? I remember when I first went out looking for sassafras root, I had a horrible time finding the first plant. However, once I found the first one, the rest just seemed to jump out at me. I don't know if any of you all have ever looked for it, but is a strange plant in that it has three different shaped leaves all on one plant. Once I actually seen one up close, then I realize that they were all around me and I had just been overlooking them. LOL
