Title: Hog skins?
Post by: JackCrafty on November 24, 2008, 01:53:33 pm
Have any of you guys made rawhide from feral hog skins?  I'm going to visit the local processor today and he says I'm welcome to the deer and feral hog skins (he throws them away).  Thanks.

If you try it I'd go with the young sows. I wouldn't want to chop and hack my way through a Boar Hog shield. I know the Green People will jump on this , but after you scrape it,wash it in gas and then in strong dish detergent with gloves on, of course. They are very greasey, this will save a lot of work.

You might wanna look for TSP(tri sodium phosphate) at your hardware store it is better than soap detergents, really strong gotta wear protective gloves when using it. And its cheaper than gas!

                                                                        ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
tri sodium phosphate...........Laundry Detergent.....Better not still be in Tide....they started banning it from Detergents in the 70's!!!!

It's a Fertilizer of sorts and causes havoc with the water supply

You could make some primitive footballs. LOL  I once made an arm guard from a Russian boar my dad shot.

I've got a hide from a small Russian boar in the freezer, haven't done anything with it yet. I was thinking about bark-tanning it.
