Title: New Osage ,still in the works.
Post by: Pappy on November 11, 2008, 06:48:13 am
I cut this wood in 02,debarked it in 05 and roughed out a bow in May of this year.It is some of the really dark and dense Osage that I have made some bows from before and really like that kind  of wood.It is 60 n-n.I have it straightend and tillered out to 55@24,then I put it back on the form
and heat treated the belly, flipped the tips and put some tip overlays made out of deer leg bone.
It is the first time I have used leg bone for this and I really like it,looks like Ivory. I plan on finishing
the tiller this weekend I am shooting for 55@26 I think I have plenty of room to do that while
tweaking the tiller a little. Here are a few pictures of how it is coming. :) The timber skin it what
I plan on backing it with, unless I can beg GregB out of a Copper head skin that he has that matches the one I have ,a pair of them are hard to come by.We may have to flip for them.  ;) ;D

Hi Pappy

Looks good -I really like the recurved tips but every time I try it they just straighten back out even thought there is tones of wood.
Any tips on how to keep them bent -- everyone else seems to be able to get it to work -- must be holding my mouth wrong.

Graeme

I just use dry heat on Osage and don't string it back up for a day or 2.I do the same when I heat treat the belly. I don't leave the tip extremely heavy, maybe just a little heaver than the rest of the
limb, but not much. :) I don't do static, mine work toward the end of the draw.

Thats a gnarly looking bow Pappy. Looks right up your alley.  ;) Should be a great shooter, and at 60" it should fit your short draw length pretty well.  ;)  ;D  8) Can't wait to see it with those copper head skins on it.  ;)  ;D

Very nice Pappy. You are getting all the goody out of those recurve limbs. Nice work as always.
Between the bows and the deer you are a machine this year!  ;)   Pat

I tried to get him to take it hunting this past week.  He's probably done to much work on it now to kill with it.   ;)
Then again Pappy is getting picky on shot selection.  After GregB killed one head on Pappy will only take a head on or an anal shot.  Anything else is a gimmie.

We got quite a laugh out of the frontal/anal shot selection this past week.  Probably had to be there, but I'm still chuckling now that I think about it.

Ya for some reason I really like this kind of wood, the only thing I wonder about is Badger's
weight thing ,because this wood is dense and heavy, same lay out as most of my bow and
haven't weighted it but it has to be almost twice as much.I have a couple more out of this same type wood and they have held up great and very smooth with no hand shock. Maybe finished it would be about the same because the limbs do get pretty thin. :)

Nice looking bow Pappy.  I'm waiting on a stave of osage that I won on ebay now.  Hope I can do as well as you with it.  When you have to buy osage it's to expensive to mess up!  I'm also hoping to bring the family to your event this May.  I could have supplied you with a copperhead skin from one I killed this summer, but after unknowingly sitting within 2 feet of it for over 15 min. while I cut turkery feathers off of 2 wings that I took out of the freezer,  I couldn't bring myself to fool with it!  I still didn't see it until my wife started screaming!  Luckily the kids had left a ball bat laying in the yard, so I was able to bash his head in.  Anyway, nice bow.

Thanks Eric,I was thinking that also. The right doesn't seem to be bending quit as much and
that should solve that.Sometimes it is hard for me to See on the board when they get this far along,I seem to see it better when it is held in the hand and drawn that way. :)

Hi Pappy

Fine looking bow -- I really love those recurves -- I will have to give it a try sooner or later, just never seem to get around to it.

Title: Re: New Osage ,still in the works.
Post by: Pappy on December 02, 2008, 05:47:52 am
It's really not much trouble,I always do it when I get them almost finished tillering and it
don't change the tiller much if any and will add a few pounds for some final adjustments.
I don't really recurve them in the normal sense I just flip the last 6 inches or so of the tips. :)
This was my first Copperhead and they didn't match prefect, copperhead are hard to get a prefect match but after the finish if you didn't no it you probably wouldn't notice.  :)

One of the snakes was a little larger then the other which makes the pattern a little bigger, but the color match is really good and I think they look great! The bone tips look really good also and are nice and narrow. ;) Ought to have time to get a little hunting in with it before the end of the season. :)

Cameras are too "unforgiving".  In person, the color difference between those two skins is hardly noticable.
I think the skins and especially the bow look SUPER GOOD!  Narrowing those tips down some made her look sharp too. ;D

I love your bows Pappy. Great job. I bet its a meat maker for sure. I also love those copperheads skins. I'm praying for a good set to come slithering by me  come next year when they crawl out of their holes. They are plentiful just south of here where we camp alot, they just are'nt that big from what I've seen but I'm believeing for a set of twins, lol Once again nice bow, I like those flipped tips too.   Danny

Well I still didn't get it finished but did get to shoot it some more and also got the tips finished, the shelf finished and 4 coats of Tru Oil on the whole bow,now it is ready for the grip, just can decide on what kind.I usually use just a leather grip but am thinking about rapping this one with leather laces
or the strips Pat gave me,not sure what it is called ??? I will get that this week I hope. ;) :) See
what yall think about the tips,it is leg bone and I think looks pretty good, looks like Ivory when polished. :)

Looking great Pappy.  I like the leg bone but I love that shelf as well. Is that just leather on the outside or something else?  Looks like a beauty.

Just leather ,trimmed to fit.I usually don't put that much shelf on my bows but being this is planed to be my hunting bow I like to leave the arrow on the bow and hang it while in the tree. This makes it much easier to do that. :)

Looks great Pappy, I'm surprised at the shelf, you sure you gonna be able to shoot off a shelf, I like it alot,if you can't, I'm sure I can.hint hint. On the grip, what about that turtle skin that might look good might have to stain it though.  have a good Christmas, got you Christmas card, tell Miss Joanie and Beau and Christina, Merry Christmas for me. hey is my bow still in the hot box and have you thought about what I should back the bow with. raw hide or sinew due to the worm holes. I was thinking coming down in January or February for a week end to finish the bow or a least try.

Bow looks about finished, including the full draw.  Stand a little closer to the camera like Gordon does for the final full draw shot. Hey! I've been to your place! Still glad I made it to the 11th Classic.

Great looking bow, Pappy.  I like the board that you have added to the tiller machine.  I have one similar to that so that I can tell how far down each limb goes.  Great to get your Christmas card.  Hope you all have a great Christmas.  I can't wait til May to get back up there.  I can come  earlier this year, I think.  Back to the bow:  I love the tips and the slight recurve.  That bow looks very fast.  Great work.
