I got a kinda surprise gift from Leapingbare about a week ago - thanks Jesse and thier will be a return gift :). It was three chunks of Horsecreek chert, one heat treated and two raw. I've been beating on rocks off and on for the last few days - that heat treated one was calling my name today. Here's the result, that stuff has some amazing colors in it.

Thats awsome. That point has the classic horsecreek color. You do really good work Paul, your work inspires me. I'm glade you got a point out of it.
I really like this stuff.
Its probably my favorite rock to knapp. I enjoy the challenge of trying to keep all the colors in the finished point.
Pappy should post a pic of a point and a clovis I did outa the same rock sometime Monday.
Now we just need to see a pic of horse creek points From two others ;)
-
Stunning point Paul :)
-
wow that just looks great! as always!! but those colors are sweet- Ryan
-
Those colors are awesome!
-
That's an incredible point sir!
PD
-
Wowsa!!! :o
-
Thanks guys. What are ya talking about Jesse? Your Clovis's and big blades are what keeps me inspired ::). I think it's a healthy thing that we all inspire each other 8). Do you collect that rock yourself or do ya have a supplier? I'm going to try and make Classic #12, if so we may have to go on a little gathering spree ;D.
-
Man, I love the colors in that stuff. Now I have to get the time to start on the package I got, too. Thanks Jessie.
-
Nice job Coyboy,it's great to see all this talent, makes ya want to go hit the rockpile. And to think I wasn't going to knapp today, seeing those points gets ya in the mood, I guess you could call it point porn...........hope the little lady don't see that, mine thinks I'm nuts as it is

Yes i got it myself Cowboy.. but i had permission to get it with a friend who knows the people who own the land. i got about 120lbs of it.. there are other places to get it and i will probably be privileged to that info, but out of respect i will not go down there and collect rock from that spot without permission. but like i said there are other places to get it. its about a 2 1/2 to 3hr drive south west of clarksville. The thing about this stuff is you find it in creeks, and its mixed in with other cherts and you gatta carrie around a billit and smack every rock you pick up and if your lucky 1 outa 20 has color. thats why this stuff is so rear.
-
Think you might be able to bring some to the next Classic? That is cool looking stuff! You in Afghan land yet?
-
yes tiller i got some ppl can try but it ant just ganna be laying there to get beat up. this stuff is hard to get.
-
very nice brother, would look good sticking out of an elk.. didn't get a bull this year, passed on some real warriors though ... always next year for the big guy.... got a late cow tag so Joe and i are going to see if we can get them with our Marc st louis bows...hoping to get a late season winter turkey with your stone points and Pat's sourwood shafts..happy hunting bro . HAWK
-
If I have some extra time before the Classic I will help ya dig it up. Got any left over blasting material or gunpowder? We can probably rig something up. Now any DOD guys willing to give us a hand? ;D
-
I got inspired after looking at Cowboy's point. I've been chipping all day, off and on. So, I took my heat treated piece and went to work on it. It was looking good, had a 6", almost thin, preform, when I hit the "crack". I can still get a point out of it, but not that 6"er I was after. :-\ :'(
-
That's sad to hear Eddie :'( ;D. That one I had was a lot bigger too but riddled with flaws on one end and across one face, as we knappers know - that's standard for a lot of different materials :-\.
If it come's to be Jesse, I'll hit the creek with ya. A lot of places I gather ya have to smack em all to see whats inside, but usually one in two are good ;D.
Thanks Mike: Too bad about the elk huntin. Your right, always next year. Best of luck to you and Joe!
-
yea Eddie thats common with this stuff, its a very challenging rock to knapp. but if you take your time and do it right and with some luck you can get a beautiful point.
Cowboy we could go down there but you would have to come a day before the shoot or stay after the shoot. its ganna be a all day trip, 3hrs down 5-6hrs of getting rock and 3hrs back.
-
We'll keep that tucked away Jesse - I ain't holding my breath ;D. If everything was to work out though, I got plenty of gas and room in the back of the truck :).
-
Nother quick question? Does that stuff turn red with heat treat? or is that natural?
-
its natural , that rock has a very high iron content. only thing the heat dose is makes it easier to knapp. and it might brighten up the colors a little.
-
10-4. I thought it kinda resembled what we called iron ore as kids that we found around here.
-
I've got some cooking tonight with a little coral and Kay County. I'll probally start playing with it when I get back from S.C.
-
Can't wait to see some more of that color Eddie. Let us know how the heat treat goes, I'll prolly cook these two I got as soon as the ground dries out enough..
-
Cowboy, get one of those cheep turkey pans from the grocery store. and a small bag of fine sand from walmart.
Put the sand in the pan and bury the rock in the sand. put the pan in your oven, set oven at 250* then ramp it up 350* after 1hr than ramp it to 450* after 2hr than 500* about 45min later.. let it soak at 500* for 5-8hrs than just tern the oven off let it cool for about 4hrs than crack the door to the the oven, then let it cool for another 3hrs.
Well Paul this is how i do it. Its to easy. i would be afraid that ground cooking it might get it to hot.
-
Paul, I took one and sliced about 6 pieces out of it and put it in my toaster for 2hrs at 200dgs. Then ramped it up to 450dgs for 3 more hours then turned it back down to 200dgs and went to bed. Turned it off in the morning. Got home from work this afternoon and ran some test flakes ,, and ,,it is nice. ;D
-
Eddie, i got a large crate of HC out at the bow range. if i can get one of the guys to send you a flat rate box of it, could you cut me some slabs and mail erm to me.. and you can just keep the rest of it.
-
Sure can, I was suprised how easy some of it cut. There was some hard places but it still wasn't bad. It seems the more color the easier it was. Hope I didn't cheat, but I sure wanted to get the most out of that pretty rock.
-
yea when you abrade it the color will come off onto the abrader like chalk on the sidewalk.
-
It does the same thing when sawing it, the water changes different colors. It would probally make a good stain, or paint mixed with hide glue.
-
Late getting in here to comment...beautiful point Paul! You did a great job of including the different colors. Jesse told me he had sent some of it out to several of you guys.
-
Thanks Mr.Greg. that stuff worked easier than I thought it would. Eddie: You and Jesse are giving me ulcers here - if ya have any extra, send it my way ;D.
-
;D
-
Me too! Though if I tried to heat treat in the oven my head would end up on a platter!!!!
-
HaH she's got ya like that?? lol
-
Heh, Heh, Is that Mama, David? ;), If not you can get a new girl. ::) >:D
-
;D
