Title: Yellow poplar? and bamboo?
Post by: whitewoodshunter on October 28, 2008, 07:11:42 pm
Ok here is what I was thinking of doing. There is a sporting goods store near me that sells blanks for the ribs of canoes/ kayaks, and I have found a few that look to be yellow poplar. I was thinking of gluing a 1/8 inch thick piece of bamboo to the 3/8 piece of yellow poplar to make a 1/2 inch stave,66 inches long.If this will work would titebond11 or111 work in the glue up? I don't have that much experience with all wood composites.

The boo would over power the poplar, which is barely a bow wood as is. It would have to be narrowed to about 1/4" WIDE to work :P.

I'd go with Poplar and maple or Poplar with Hickory........JMO

A nice Bias Cut Hickory Back...if a thin enough Piece .....say 3/16ths to 1/4"....should not overpower the Poplar

Where is this store that sells these strips for kayaks? Pm me if you would. I want them for a kayak, I feel like Kegan using Poplar for a bow.

I also think you would be better off in the long run finding something besides poplar. It's possible to make a bow from it, but it's not generally considered to be bow wood and I wouldn't trust a poplar bow too far even if I got it shooting. There's just too many good proven bow woods out there to be messing with poplar unless you just want to try one as a challenge.

In that case why not? Just remember to heavily trap the back and use a wide belly. If you just want to see if you can, there's no reason you can't come up with something.
