Well, if Keenan is going to start posting sneak previews, then so am I!
Here is a bow I finished this morning. It’s made from 2 billets that I harvested from a buddies property in the Cascades. 66” ntn, 60# @ 27”. I’ll provide braced and full-draw pictures when I’m satisfied the finish is fully cured. But for now, enjoy…

Very nice Gordon. I've grown to appreciate yew with just the few bows I've built with it. Did you use a Z splice at the handle? I have a few sets of billets that need some attention. ;D
-
Hey, Gordon
That looks very familiar!! Nice work, as usual.
-
Pat, I did use a Z-splice. Thank you adb, I much enjoyed looking at your yew bow also.
-
:o :o :o ooohhh Thats sweet! Sneak peak heck, thats just down right teasing ;D Looks like another incredible master piece Gordon. Can't wait to see more details of her ;)
Also how are the those stats I gave you in comparison to what you have there. Looks like you might have gone a touch narrower and thicker profile? And six inches longer I'm sure would change dimension a fair amount.
I knew as quiet as you had been that you had to have something good up your sleeve ;)

Keenan,
This was the first yew selfbow that I've attempted so I didn't quite know what to expect. The width is 1 1/4" at the fades tapering evenly to 1/2" at the tips. It's 7/8" deep at the fades tapering to 1/2" at the tips. I've always been a little envious of those folks with yew longbows and now I finally have one for my own that I can take to shoots. I have to admit that while I'm still a vine maple aficionado, yew makes a pretty darn nice selfbow.

Thanks Gordon, I thought it looked a Little more ELB style. Sure looks like it would send an arrow sailing. I know why you did that ::) Your going to make sure that you take home the long distance prize at the gathering this next spring ;)

Absolutely! Western bows rule!
-
Very nice bow I like a lot. BTW what kind of pelt is that?Ron
-
;D Now thats a serious challenge if I ever heard one ;D Guess I'm going to have to rally the east side troops and start in on the flight bow specs ::)
But, maby we will get lucky and all your Valley bows will still be water logged and we will win with the kid bows. :o
-
Very nice! Can we see closeups of the nocks? ;D
-
But, maby we will get lucky and all your Valley bows will still be water logged and we will win with the kid bows.
Well maybe. But don't forget a certain pair of fire cured yew billets that somehow ended up in my possession. This bow is only practice for the real deal. If you east-siders want to line up your kid's bows next to what comes of those billets that's fine by me! >:D
Ron, that's a reindeer pelt in the picture - not one that I killed though. ;D

Here you go Patrick...

Gordon, Thats a great looking bow. I have some yew drying and would like to try one of those come spring. Any suggestions I have never worked with yew. By the way it seems selfbow killed elk taste better than what I remember my dads rife killed elk. Greg

Oh yea Greg, I can believe that. I hope you plan on saving a little piece for me - I'd sure like to celebrate that elk with you...
-
Yes Gordon, I have some backstrap saved, you just need to invite me down for the day. Greg
-
Oh man Gordon, that is so nice! Well done.
-
Very nice Gordon, looking forward to more pics. Your attention to detail is flawless.
-
Nice tips, can't wait for more pics. I bet the tiller is spot on. :) :)
-
good job gordon....i dont know what you and keenan are up too but i could stand on the side line and keep score.later john

Now Gordon, you know if you are to win with them fire killed yew billets, that it would be an eastside victory. Eastern grown equals eastern bow ;D :o Of-coarse it's not all about winning it's how you play, Right?
PS. All is fair in War :o
-
Sweet bow Gordon. I see a heavy Strunk influence there ;D
Fit and finish are as good as I've seen...

John,
On the last day of the east-side Rendevouz a flight shoot is held. Bryan Bryand (a west-sider) won this spring's shoot with an excellent selfbow that he had crafted from hazelnut (with a little guidance from yours truly ;D). Since then a friendly competition has developed between the west and east and I fully expect that the east-siders will be lying in wait at the next get-together.
Fair enough Keenan, we'll limit our competition bows to those that were fashioned from west-side wood 8) - though that fire killed yew is going to make a bitchin' bow.
-
Beautiful so far Gordon, can't wait to see the rest. You do some beautiful work. :)

-
Just kidding Gordon, It's the skills of the bowyer that bring out the speed and performance of the bow. ;) Just looking for any angle to hedge the stack the odds >:D
-
Very nice, Gordon, but you are a tease. :) Jawge
-
Excellent bow as always Gordon.

Keenan if this is the case we're all in trouble agaist Gordon. Joel
-
Excellent bow Gordon! ;D
-
Gordon forgot to mention that the west side bows took 1st (mine w. guidence from gordon) and 2nd place (gordon's bow) at the distance shoot.
I look forward to next years competition. I have some dry apple, holly, ivy, hawthorne, serviceberry, oceanspray, yew, cascara, and vine maple from the west side that needs to be made in to bows. ;D
