I finished my first self bow this March, at least the first one I did by my self, Gordon helped me tiller one last year. She is osage 63" ntn and 57#@ 27", she holds about 1.75" of reflex after about 2000 shots. Copperhead skins, moose hide grip, seal fir rest. I was going to go on a drop camp Elk hunt with Gordon in Oregon but my wife said no. So I ended up hunting here in Washington about an hour from my house, I was going to get two days, a week apart not much for elk hunting but any day in the woods with my bow is a good day. I hunted about 6 hours the first day, I did not see any thing but my hunting buddies saw a few small bulls. My next hunting day was Thursday sept 18, I walked into a road closure area in the dark, hunted for about 3 hours until I found some fresh sign. I sat down on a stump to eat some almonds and I heard a snap, I knew it was an elk so I got up to move away from an open grassy area and in the timber toward the creek where I heard the elk. My friends have been bugling all week so I cow called once then chuckled. The bull came in immediately he walked by me at about 8 to 10 yards but I could not shoot because he was looking at me. When he passed I had no shooting lane, he walked pass me about 18 yards and turned directly be hide me I knew he would wind me any second. I was on my knees facing directly away from the bull I had about a 10 foot shooting lane between two trees the bull was still walking so I did a swing draw twisting my body around hit my anchor and released. The arrow went where I was looking and disappeared in the bull, I thought for a minute I missed because the arrow was gone. The bull stopped not knowing what was going on then turned around he walked a few steps and coughed then he ran about 30 yards or so and hit the ground. I was standing there with my mouth open the bull never moved again. I was shooting a ash arrow and a 160 stos head, total arrow weight 700 grs. The arrow was a complete pass thru and was sticking in the ground about 5 yards passed where I shot the elk. The elk lived about 8 to 10 seconds after I shot it. The whole thing was amazing. Greg

-
Congratulations. That is quite an achievement! Jawge
-
Bryan, I got him in the winston unit 520. I am in Olympia. Greg
-
Huntinonly, Congratulations on your first bull and first primitive kill. That is quite an accomplishment. Can't believe that you actually had to pass on a hunt with Gordon in the eagle cap wilderness. Nice looking bow and with Gordon as a mentor you can't ask for better,Again congratulations
-
Keenan, It was killing me to pass on a hunt with Gordan. We went last year and it was a great time. My wife said if I went she would have a yard sale and sell all my hunting and fishing stuff, then change the lock on the front door. After a week of thinking about it I decided I would miss my fly rods too much.

Wise choice, ;) ;D
-
Congrats on a nice Bull,well done. :)

Congratulations on your first primitive harvest! What a way to start... ;)

Even though yopu missed another hunt with Gordon, you should thank your wife for putting you on to this bull. ;) That ought to get you a few goody points! ;D Pat

Great job on the bull. Nice bow as well, although I had to get my magnifying glass out to really see it...lol. Thanks for sharing the story. It inspires us all when we hear stuff like that. I don't know of a man here that has'nt hunted elk that does'nt long to some day, myself included. Danny

Amasing story Greg. Congratulations on your first primitive harves, sounds like your stars were well aligned. Thanks for the story and can you get Pics. I know if Gordon helped you with the bow it must be awsome but cant see it in the little pic. kenneth

Wow ! Great story. I hope to get a chance to hunt with a selfbow I have built myself this fall.I got one going so maybe,if not, then for sure next year.(Maybe even get to make some meat as you did). Congrats. Frank

Greg, while I was bummed you could not join me for the Eagle Cap hunt this year, I am delighted and proud that you were able to take such a fine animal with a bow that you made from your own hands. It was clear when I hunted with you last year that you are a gifted archer and hunter – I’m not surprised that you pulled this off. I hope you do not mind, but I scanned the pictures you sent me and posted them here so folks can gain a better appreciation for your accomplishment. Way to go buddy!

Greg, Congratulations on a fine first Elk and a great looking bow. If Gordon was your mentor it had to be a great bow. That camo you are wearing is different, what brand is it?
-
Mullet, the camo is preditor spring green. Gordon is a great mentor I have learned alot about bow making from him. Greg
-
greg, beautiful bow, but that story is really something, man. i heard elk tastes a little sweet, and very rich, always wanted to try it! Iwas walking back from my stand thursday, mad because I didnt see any deer, but happy because I had a longbow in my hands, i used a compound all of last year. anaways, I was walking in tall grass and snapped a dead twig, so i waited, thought i heard something-long story short, it was crazy hot that day, and the deer wern't moving. a basket rack MAYBEEE 15 feet away popped up from his bed in the tall gras and bolted into the woods 1o yards away, nearly crapped my pants though :D thats an awesome hunt though, hopefully you and that selfbow can get some more good huntin time. -jimmy
-
Fantastic! Congratulations on your bull. Love the bow you shot it with, too. ;D
-
Congrat's huntinonly! Nice bow and bull, awesome story :).
-
Coincidentally, my face is preditor spring green with envy. Your bow, your arrows, from your own hands...that bull was earned and will be all the sweeter! Thanks for sharing the story if not the backstraps.
