If these pics are too big, somebody please resize them. I made this bow to send to someone on Paleo for the BITH. I tried white oak and walnut from boards that had been stored in a barn for about twenty years. They were both too dry and brittle. I tried almost everything to get moisture back in the wood, but nothing worked. When the fifth or sixth one litterally blue up into five pieces, I grabbed a hatchet and a Holly stave and started whacking. Originally I was just taking out some frustration, but then it started to look like a bow so I went with it. Believe it or not, it shoots. There is nothing really semetrical (big word) about the bow, you can tell by the pics. It ended up with a little set and around 1/8" positive tiller. If this were a contest for the ugliest bow of the month, I think I would have a winner. I almost forgot. 67 1/2" NTN. 50#@28", but I tiller it to fit him at 29 1/2" draw, so it is hitting 56# for him.

I like it ,I bet he does too .Should be a wood he has access to. Was the take down part hard to do ?

The take down was fiarly easy, it is just layers of FG cloth and 2 ton epoxy. I think he said that they had the wood in Norway, but it was illegal to cut it.

Ugly? That bow is sweet. Especially that it is made from Holly. Is this the first time you ever used Holly? I think it is a great bow. ;D

It looks great to me. It might be a touch heavy on the tips. Justin

That was my first holly, but it won't be the last. As far as the tips go, I know they are heavy, thick, wide and everything else. There were thick spots on the limbs too. I was just happy when it made it to full draw and did not want to take a chance by thinning anything down. If it wirks, don't fix it. Now I am going to make another out of the sister split, which has even more knots and twists.

I have got a bow here that I got in a trade. I could turn it into a takedown next week and take plenty of pics. But I wouldn't do it for just anybody ;D.

That wood has beautiful grain. Nice job on the take down sleeve. Yes, it was me that posted that system. It was in a PA article way back when, I met the guy who wrote the article and he showed me how to do it. There are a couple of professional glass bowyers that use that system. Carabow is one of them.

Nice bow, Madcrow...and from an unusual bow wood. We have lots of hollies around here but I never thought of it as bow wood. I know folks that carve it but they complain about how badly it checks while drying. What are your findings on this? Is it American Holly? Pat
ps. I'd be interested in seeing a tutoral on the take-down system, also!

Cool looking bow, I wouldn't have thought Holly could be used - the big one's are just shrubs around here. I read an article on that type of take down, was interesting.

I left the bark on while drying, and sealed the ends. No different from any other wood and it was fine. Plain old American Holly. I layed out of work ( cough, cough) to get a few more things done today, so I may start on the takedown sometime today.
Cowboy, some of the Holly around here can reach 1 foot or bigger diameter. There is a huge one at Nuggets house that he had a tree stand in. That must have been some prickly cover.
