Title: New Snakeskin Backed Osage Bow
Post by: Susquehannock on August 02, 2008, 07:58:13 pm
Here is a rattlesnake backed osage self bow that I just finished. It is 63" ntn, 55# @ 26". It is 1-3/8" wide to 1/2" nocks. I cut the stave about 2-1/2 years ago and the belly had some deep drying cracks because I stored it out in a hot shed. As a result, the handle area still had a few checks so I sawed off the handle and glued a walnut strip into it and glued the sawed handle back on the walnut (some of the cracks are still visible in the handle). The tips are walnut and deer antler overlays. I flipped the tips just a tiny bit. This is my 7th bow (4th shooter). It is probably my best tiller and best shooting and looking bow. Thanks for looking.

Jason

I dyed the deerskin handle brown with rit dye. The bow on the left (which is also osage) shows the original color of the leather. Thanks for looking.

Man! I didn't know you had to stick out your but when you shoot , No wonder i pull to the right. ;D Well, that is a good looking bow, I always like the snake skin ones.  I may have to make one myself.

:) I stuck my camera on "self-timer" mode on a tripod. I think I was ducking down to fit into the camera frame. It does look funny now that I look at it.

I think its just a funny angle while you are leaning into the bow.  Great work on the bow.  Justin

Thanks everyone.

Pat, I've been hooked for several years! I found the PA site about 4 years ago and started making board bows. Family life and work have kept me from making more bows. Some guys put out numerous bows per month . . . I'm happy to have started 3 bows this year and finished 2! This will be my hunting bow this year.

Phil, I totally agree with your philosophy. Most of my wood is less than perfect, and it's fun to solve problems to get a functioning bow. I have also taken a lot of information from this site to help my progress as a bowyer.

Adam, thanks for the compliment. I have looked at your bows online many times and they are some of the nicest bows I have seen.
