City man led me to a patch of boo in MS this morning. Wondering what kind this may be, or more to the point - is it good for bows ;). The largest were around four to five inches dia, and forty feet tall. He told me to take it all and I could have fit more into the truck but was plumb tuckered out - notice wet clothes from head to toe :P ;D.

Vivax? Maybe? Nice timber bamboo for sure though.
-
Moso, I'll take some pictures of some down here if I can get my driver to stop. All of them want to be Formula One Drivers. Nice find Paul.
-
Paul, That ought to make some nice arrows! ;D Look how long the internodes are. Pat
-
Like El Salmonete said, looks like Moso. Looks like you've already been busy. :)
-
i have no expierence with bamboo, but from what the others are saying, id say yes it would be good for bows. i know it would be good for didgeridoos!

Didgeridoos? Moso it shall be then, be on it's way to the TX blast furnace tomorrow. Thoughts on how to cure it out without it warping and cracking. Wondering whether to rip it now while green or let it dry whole.
I'm thinking atlatl darts Pat ;D.

Nice haul, man your out early today. :) :)

I looks alot like moso, but it looks even more like moso's close cousin Phyllostachys bambusoidies(I cany remeber its common name), which, according to the Japanese, is an even bow boo than moso. Great score!!!! :o :o
-
Ought to be good for quiwer's as well. ;)
-
Nice haul Paul, should I keep an eye on the mail ::) :D
-
yeah man didgeridoo, check this out, its the wind instrument he's playing.

If you plan to dry them whole, take a long drill bit, longest you can find and make a hole through the centre to let the air circulate both inside as well as the outside, will help in preventing cracks.
-
Paul, I have used a small diameter rebar to punch a hole through the webbing at the nodes inside the culms. As Shiakri said this will help it dry without splitting. Pat
-
I'd at least just pop em in half. Nice haul.
-
Couldn't sleep Pappy - must be gettin old ;D. Those didgeridoo's make some cool sounds, doubt I'll get too far on that though. That's what I was thinking Pat, a peice of rebar - I got plenty of that. And may pop a couple in half and maybe even rip a couple just to see.
Not a bad idea Greg, a quiver - would be quick to make, tough, and light when it dries. Think I'll use the rest to decorate a tiki lounge in the back yard 8).

Cowboy,
Good score, you can flood the market now ;D I'd test split some, quarter some at first..Every place is different from what I have found..Usually I split mine after letting it set for a bit, but its probably drier here. You can probably cut it all up like Eddie does, but thats what I would experiment with a little first to make sure it stays straight..
Don't worry about the species "name". If it makes good bows you can call it nectar if you wish..because I know what you will call it if its lousy stuff(especially after all that work!)..

Thanks Rich! That's what I kinda had in mind was to experiment with several of them to see what I could get away with - Hope it turns out to be nectar ;D.
