Well....I still haven't had the Ambition to finish either one of My Sinewed Bows I have started....but I was looking at this Hickory rough cut Board that my Brother gave me last year with all of the Birdseye he cut for me....and I decided that I had time to make me another Paddle Bow of Sorts.....so I went to work on it Friday evening...and just finished this Morning and have been shooting it in for the last two hours.....shoots great.....very little noticeable Hand Shock....in fact it's more of a slight push...than a vibration....Hickory works great down here....because there is next to no Humidity here to effect Hickory.....
The Bow is 66 inches Long......2 1/4" wide at the widest point of the Limbs....narrowing to 3/4" at the Tips....then I carved in the 3/8" Pin Nocks....I wrapped the Tips with Sinew for added Strength and looks....The Handle area is 1" wide and 1 3/16" thick....I made a Grip out of a piece of Brain Tanned Deer Hide.....
I had a Fancy String Groove Nock cut for the Bottom Limb....but I screwed up....when I strung it once to check Tiller after taking off some Wood....I got in a Hurry....and had the String only in one Groove....the other side was in a Groove of the Fancy Tip I made.....and when I drew it back.....the String Slipped and broke the wood off.....so I Pin Nocked it!! I was Lucky ....huh??
I finished the Bow off with 3 coats of Tallow and Beeswax...heated it in over a Gas burner to soak it in really good This should make a Nice Hunting Bow....It finished out at 56 pounds at 28 inches of draw ........Ain't nothing Fancy.....just a Meat Getter..... I will try to get a Full Draw view on here after My Wife wakes up.....She's working Graveyards!!

that aint no pretty bow! What's it doing on this site?!?!? You should know better!
-
that my idea of a bow
very functionable, yet it aint gonna win no beauty contest.
excellent job, tiller looks great to me.
when you say the wife works graveyards, do you mean the real late shift,or is she graverobbing to get supplies for ya >:D lol
keep them "ugly meat makers" coming.
-
That really is a stunning bow, El. I admire your willingness to leave it drawn for so long on a t stick just so we can get a nice look at it. Thanks for sharing. :) Jawge
-
Nice and simple, well tillered bow, should be quite a good hunter, I like it.
-
Scott....you instigating little Twit!!! You are trying to make ME come to Canada and whoop yer Arse....ain't cha!!!!
S.D......Thank You....you said it...It wont win No Beauty Contest....but then I don't enter Pageant's either....they are for Girls!!!! And no My Wife aint out robbing Graves for Sinew and Skins for Backing!!! She is working 6 pm to 6 am..... but that is a Thought!!!!
And Jawge......Thank You My Friend.........I really do love the Lines of these Bows....and the Feel of them in your Hand...to me this is a Bow....and I will never change My point of View on them.....and as for leaving it at Full Draw for so Long.... I once took a Red Oak Paddle Bow I made....left it at 26 inches of Draw for 4 Hours....just to see when it would Blow.......and it never did.....never!!! I swear to the All Mighty....I don't believe that there is a more Bullet Proof Primitive designed Bow ever made than these ....they distribute stresses so evenly ...I think you would really have to try to destroy one..
Manny....that is a great compliment coming from You....I can only hope to be able to touch a Piece of Wood....and draw forth such Bows as you do...........You Da Man!!! tell ya what: i'll meet you in washington, and we can settle this there! Over some beers!
Make it Portland....and we're on!! That way I can go and see my Oldest Son...they moved from Montessano Washington to Portland
-
how about san fransisco on August 20 to see Radiohead and Beck? All day concert, i think , 85 bones...
-
Cool bow, did you make that quilt too ::) ;D
-
Cool bow, did you make that quilt too ::) ;D
Yeah....I am just an Artsy Fartsy Beauty Pageant Kinda Guy!!! ::) 8) No but in all seriousness.......the Wife and my Grandmother made all of Our Quilts..... Doilies and Throws......
-
I knew it!! ;D Seriously man, those are works of art too. My mother, grand mother, and great granmother quilted, kinda like a sickness yaknow ::)
-
Hey El
That's a great looking bow. Is it just me or is 66'' a magic number? It seems to keep showing up.
R.C.
-
Cool looking bow, love that simple style. Brian Melton is in Montessano. With those wide limbs the tiller doesn't have to be dead on.
-
strait and to the point, no frills, smooth lines. nice. the tiller looked a bit to bendy near the handle, but then i looked at the front profile, and it is spot on. good job.
Phil
-
It's My Magic Number....I just like the Feel and the Looks of the Arc of a Bow....66" Long....at 28" draw....at least in My Paddle Bows.....
Thanks Eddie....I love the Wide Limbed Bows....just cool looking and shoot good too!! But you got Me nervous now....I thought the Tiller was good.....are you saying I messed up........did I .....Oh My....I cant have that!!!! :P ::)
Phil.....Thanks for your compliments.....I like a simple sleek Bow that you are not afraid to Hunt with or get wet and muddy....and this is one that you could String and crawl around the Swamp looking for Hawgs all day with....and never have to worry about it being strung too long or getting messed up....a few scratches may give it more Character!!!
I thought that I had really messed up when Eddie said that the Tiller didn't need to be Perfect!!!! ;D
Just messing around Guys.....I am grateful for the Compliment....but I want the Constructive Criticisms too.....thats the only way to learn and to better ones self...
Oh....and I can do this too....cause it's My Post!!!!!!!!!

Good looking bow. Bends a bit much in the inner limbs and a bit stiff mid limb. See?
-
Yeah thanks....I see it....but thats the weirdest shape Ellipse I have ever seen!! Kinda flat on the top and bottom....we will see what it looks like at 28 inches tomorrow when I have the Wife take a Picture....don't really like Tiller Stick Shots....this one is leaning in about three inches against the Fence ....so it would stay standing up may be giving it a skewed appearance......Oh....Eddie .... Now see what you started ..... ::) ::) ;D :D
-
The elipse you used is more suited to a longbow with a full compas tiller. Your bow has a relatively stiff handle. The bow still looks good though
-
nice bow.
i realy like.
mbg
-
nice bow.
i realy like.
mbg
Thanks Dude....coming from a Fellow Michigander....and Primitive Bowyer........I am flattered!!
-
Nice Paddle Bow Senior.PK
-
What Marc said, The limbs need to bend the most where they are the widest. The bow looks real good..
-
Nice ,simple bow ,good job on that one. :)
Pappy
-
Thanks Pappy....means a lot coming from You........... Are you keeping Jesse in line??? I know He's a Handfull!!!!!!!!!!! Hey I will be I the U.P in a few weeks....I'll send you some pictures of your Grandpuppy while I am there ....
-
No I can't do much with him,I would love to see some pictures,I gave the last one away Tuesday so now Hannah is at piece, she really enjoyed the weekend without her babies. Tell them
all ha up in the up. :)
Pappy
-
Nice design on your bow, turned out nice!
-
Mike, thats an awesome bow! And I dont see nothin simple or plain about it. Gonna have to try one of these wide limb bows, looks like a great background for decoration for those with artistic talent....Brian
-
Mike, that is the problem with relying on the elipse to heavily. You can change it to match the bow and don't always have the right elipse. If you are using a stif handle you cannot use an eipse that is bending in the handle. I was thinking what Rich said. You made the limbs plenty wide to do the work, but you didn't use the wides part of the limb. Your bow is bending at the area marked red and the wides part of the limb is between the green marks. Now all of that extra width is extra mass that isn't working. It is a beautifull design though. Justin

Nice looking bow, I like those paddle bows.
Sean
-
Thank You Greg.....Brian....Sean....I appreciate it....I know it's not perfect....but I think that the way it is leaning against the Fence is making it look a lot worse than it is....but the Wife was gone before I got Home from Work....She's working Nights........so I got the trusty Wildveiw Game Camera out....and do you know how much trouble it is to set one up to take your Picture!!! Every time I would Draw the Bow.....it didn't go off till I let down!! Took forever...but I got one for you at full Draw...not in the T Stick

i still like it ;D

I got two Rods in my Left Leg.....and 27 screws and 12 Plates...along with Sea Coral and Elk Ligament in my Right Leg and Knee...so I really don't care how Ugly they are....they are still real.......Just teasing Tim....not getting puffy....just Poking fun!!!!
Thanks for your thoughts on the Bow....and I am glad you don't like My Legs!!!!!!!!!!! ::) ;D ;)
Scott.....I am 50....and thats not an 18 Pack......thats a Pony Keg.....and I earned every Ounce of it....with the Three Boys I have!!!!!!!!!
-

-
I'm So CONFUSED!!!!!!!
;D

-

my wife is gonna be mad at ya now, cause you just gave me a reason to go buy a game camera ;D >:D
ya i got two screws in my right knee, aint squat compared to you though.(had 3 surgeries at once on that one)

As for the Hair....I cut it off about every 4 Years...and do the Same....but I don't think they would want it any more....too gray and Thin!!!! Old Age you know..and what good is a Man without His Hair anyways?? :o
Oh...and for the really nit-picky people like Me on here....I didn't bother setting the Date on the Camera....just put the Batteries in it ....and went for it!!!
-
The tiller looks much better in the new pictures. Justin
-
The bow look's good, But I think it needs a little scraping where the wide part is. But I doubt it will hurt if you don't. Is the boo still green?

I told ya so. You can't kill that stuff. Give it 3 years and it'll be 15' high. Then it's ready for shooting.
-
I used to haveone of those big long ponytails, too-but I cut it off when the rest of it started disappearing from off the top of my head. >:(

-

Scott....you know what some people like to Stir Crap Up....but instead of using a Boat Oar....you use a 200 Horse Mercruiser!!!
Hillbilly....when this Ojibwa starts to lose the Hair...then I'll shave My Head!!!!!!
-
Ya at that angle it looks like a totally different bow, and that looks right on..I always like it better for these threads when they are shot like that as opposed to the stick for some reason..They look more correct..
-
Thanks Rich....I knew it wasn't as far off as the Picture showed...if any.....I had to lean it back against the Fence to get it to stay up...and it skewed the Picture so much that you can see the Tops of the Limbs and the Bottoms from the Side View....never should have posted that Picture!!!!!!! ;)
-
Mike, you're hilarious! I gutted myself laughing when i read what you said up there...god, you are trouble. Sent you a pm, btw.

Did I ever mention that I, ........ HATE FULL DRAWS FROM TREES AND STICKS ? ;D ;D

el destructo,
you probably knbow by now,i dont really like pretty bows. i truly loved that bow before.
now thats a "pretty bow". however i think you did that bow justice with the design and style of the bow, truly an american native style bow.
you want to hear begging, hey man that bow is the shiznit,i would be honored to own something of that quality and beauty, not to metion being made by the hands of skilled master as youself.
truly now,no more b.s.. someday i truly hope to be able to build bows like you and some of the others on here. you are truly a skilled master when it comes to building native american style bows.
i have a hickory stave that i havent decided what kind of bow to make from it yet,all though i think i may have an idea now. ;)
but hey ifn you want to give it away, hell i'm thinking it would make a nice template for me to work with ;D
peace brother,
tim
-
Mike I have no idea what milk paints are ???
As for begging I don't think so :) I would like to see one and shoot one then I can decide if I like the style.
Beautiful bow mike :)

Had a chance to shoot this bow yesterday and it shoots as nice as it looks :) Mike's up here on vacation, spent about 4 hours with him shooting bows
and the wind. He brought me a few presents and I sent him home with some. Sure is a nice guy :) And its nice to meet another fellow primitive archer face to face.
