Well guys I have been laid off so I have had plenty of time. I started this bow right before the Hickory shoot. I finished it about a week ago and have been shooting it almost constantly. I love it ;D .
It is 65" nock to nock , 50# @ 28" . Has several knots . More than I have had to deal with . Osage from Texas with a hemp wrapped handle.
ENJOY I know I will ;)

Good looking bow, TJ-should make a good hunting buddy. Now don't tell me that you done went and got you one of those Chris Cade man-dresses! :o ;D
-
Nice bow there buddy. The tiller looks pretty darn good. You better watch out for the chiggers if your going to wear a skirt like that. :D Justin
-
No that is not a Chris Cade man dress. That is an Official MTB made kilt. Custom made for me.
Here are a few more pics

Thanks guys . It was fun to make
-
Nice, TJ. Looks like meat this fall!!! ;) Pat
ps. I like you too much to give you a hard time about the Kilt...and sporran. :D :D :D :D :D ::)
-
Thats a nice tiller on that bow considering working around all those knots. I wouldn't dare tease you about your kilt, you look pretty big and I might end up seeing you in person one day!! Seriously I really like the kilts. Steve
-
I can take the jokes about the kilt. I am seure in my manhood.8) Pat I made the sporran. The kilt was made by my mom. I 'm sure there will a joke or two about that also.
Thanks for the comments about the bow too. ;D
-
I got a little story about kilts, several years ago I thought about marketing them. I wanted to talk several construction companies into having their carpenters wear them, and was even looking for a law firm willing to have their lawyers wear the formal versions. I felt pretty confident if they started showing up around town they might catch on. Steve

she looks good! like the handle idea! ...and the tiller of course!

-
Your bow turned out really well, I like it! :)
-
Well thanks guys . I am proud of it. This one may have to stay around my house for a while. This one has not been promised to anyone . ;)
-
Nice job on that one. No coment on the kilt......lol. ;D

I have been told I should keep my mouth shut in the past about tiller but others have said they really want to know what I think.
The top picture shows a hinge about 10" down from the tip and the last foot of the bottom limb is not bending at all. I would straighten these areas out ,but again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and lots of folk think the tiller looks great on this bow.
Last time I critiqued a tiller honestly I got some real nasty PMs saying I was brutally honest and the first time bowyer would probably never make another bow if the work he was so proud of was criticized. In the above mentioned case the bow came out of the fades stiff as a board for a foot, had a big hinge on both limbs then was only slightly bending to the tips. Everyone chimed in with "great tiller", I didn't see the same thing as they did and offered some suggestions for correcting the tiller.
Let me know, if you guys would rather me not offer my two cents worth, I will back off on tiller assessments.
-
Eric, I think you have shown you have a good eye for tiller. I also agree honesty is the best when given with good intentions as I am sure you always do. This particular bow I was taking some of the knots into consideration. They can throw a tiller off a bit but still give a good shooting bow. I have had my butt chewed ot for the same thing. Call is as you see it and the bowyer can take it as he wants! Steve
-
Looks like you honored osage with this one. Bookmarked for June Self BOM, too.
-
Well I think if you can't take the opion of another bowyer do not post on a web page. Pictures on here may not show the bow in its true form . The camera puts weird shadows and angles on a bow. I see what Eric was saying. On my tillering tree it looks different.
I appreciate all comments and opinions. Even if they are flawed ;) ;D
Just kidding .
T.J.

Looks pretty good TJ, I like the hemp handle wrap, did you seal the handle with anything?
-
Eric, you are an experienced bowyer and have built many beautiful well tillered bows. Your opinion is always welcome here. ;) I do see what you are talking about in the top and bottom limb.
Like TJ said, if you can take the opinions of others don't post on the web. Constructive criticism is what helps us get better at our craft. Pat
-
LOVE IT! bow and the kilt!!
-
Dana I sealed the handle with Titebond 3 . It dries clear and you can still get traction from the hemp
-
You said:
" Here are more pics"..... well you showed the bow but I was hoping for more pics of that skirt....
HA... just ribbing U TJ.... Love the Bow... and the... what's it called again.. :)
honestly. Bow is awesome. I like that you went to a built up arrow rest rather than a cut in. JMO but I dont like the cut ins as well. Your skills are noticeably improving this bow is top rate.
On the tillering comments. I would rather folks say it how they see it. I would want the truth even if it is harsh. and as well pointed out by TJ the camera can throw funny angles on a pic.
later guys.
Hope to see this bow at pats this summer. But I dont know about the kilt.. .you might wanna leave that one at home. :)

nice bow. one of these days im gonna make a shootable one.
-
Nice bow, I like the handle idea. I think that would be more weather resistant than leather. May have to try that on my next bow.

I know as a begining bowyer I value the opinions and constructive criticism of other more experienced bowyers than myself. I want to get better at building bows as quickly as possible while attending the school of hard knocks the least amount of time. ;D
-
Nice bow - love the handle. How did you get the 2-tone effect? Also, where does one get hemp cord?
(....Ok guys, have at it with the glaucoma jokes....)
-
Postman, you can get hemp twine at Wal Mart in the craft section. It is very strong and makes a very good handle wrap. I set my wrapped handles in Massey finish. Pat
-
The 2 tone was done with some black ink.
-
TJ I've done several bows with hemp cordage for handles, I've dyed it black with liguid rit dye and usually seal it with some diluted white glue
followed by several coats of spar varinish, and like ya say it keeps it grippy texture, leather looks nice but if it gets wet it also gets slimy.
Pat haven't tried the massey finish yet but I bet it also works good.
As for criticizing a bow as long as its done in a positive manner fine, but remember that a new guy posting their first few bows will be
extremely proud of their bow so with the criticism also find something positive to say about the bow. Criticism should also be offered
with advice as to why and how to fix the problem. If all your going to say is "Tiller is off" or such its best to keep it to yourself. JMO
-
Nicejob, TJ. I think the tiller looks good considering the knots you had to work with. I don't think you and Cade need to worry about bee's as much as you should the " Mud dobbers". ;D
-
OOOOOOOOO :o mud dobbers. Hopefully I will not be motionless long enough for one to try and build a nest! :o
-
;D ;D
-
Dude nice bow, good tiller, has some character, is pretty and uses hemp nice deal ;D
P.S. I'm diggin the kilt
-
Much thanks to ya
-
nice bow, and i was gonna chalk the weak spot up to the knots. as of yet i have still to tackle anything with knots. i guss im still too chicken. and as for the kilt, i know a guy that owns a biker leather shop. hes about 6' 6" 350lbs. got to respect the kilt...
i got a dumb question, whats a mud dobber? or maybe its best not to ask...
Phil
-
Nice one TJ, always love that yellow wood - I'll be quiet about the kilt too, glad you like it ;D.
Phil: I don't have a scientific explanation on a mud dobber, but it's a wasp that builds it's nest out of little balls of mud - little chambers stacked on top of each other like tunnels. They lay an egg inside, paralize some spiders and pack them in there (for the larvae to feed on) then seal it up.
-
Mud dobbers are such a nuisance. Every year when we get down the Christmas decorations that are stored in plastic tubs in my shop, we have to clean off the mud dobber nests and since our clay is red, you never can quite get the red spots off of what they built their nests on. I even had them make nests in the shell pockets of my Filson strap hunting vest. Arrrrrggggggg. Nasty buggers.
Nugget you did good on the bow man. And as one owner of a kilt to another, remember the words from Braveheart when the English were planning on deploying the archers against Wallace, "Arrows cost money, send in the Irish instead". ;) Remember who came out on top there?
Mike
-
Hey, nugget... why do they call it a kilt? Cuz that's what happened to the last man that called it a skirt.
-
I probably shouldn't ask...but what is a Chris Cade man dress?
-
Dane a Chris Cade man dress is a "Utili Kilt" . The name "man dress" came about after the CTA shoot in Hickory. Chris wore a "Utili Kilt" he bought off of site on E bay. I saw it, liked it, always wanted one,so I made my own instead of buying it . Also I did not want to be a total copy cat ;D
Thanks ab3122
-
Nice looking bow. The thing that freaks me out about kilts is that they were historically worn without underwear...lol. Jim
-
Very true. But the question yo uhave to ask yourself is : Was I wearing my kilt historically correct. :o
-
Yep, that's the problem with Mud-Dobbers. ::) :-\
-
Thanks, Nugget. That clarifies that, I think?
Speaking of kilts, when someone asks what you are wearing under it, you can say "my shoes", but Roman reenactors have a special reply for what are you wearing under your tunic. I can't say it here, as it is a family oriented site, so PM me if you want the answer.
-
A family friendly answer is when asked, they say nothing. ;D
Mike
-
True and proper.

I wonder how much an osage caber would weigh ???... I'm thinking at least 12 stone. Anyone ever hear that song... I think it was called "The sleeping scotsman?"
Thanks guys for the handle info!
