Title: Osage Orange
Post by: ripmyfly on May 31, 2008, 11:26:21 am
We just had to dead head our huge osage orange that sits on our farm. If the wood is still solid can it used? Some of the limbs are 10" in caliper.

Yep. I made a bow from a piece of osage that had lain on the ground in mud for three years. The only problem with wood like that is that it often has drying checks, but you can usually work around them.

Should be OK unless the powder post beetles have been working on it, look for piles of dust under the trunk. If it does have bug damage it it may not go too deeply into the heart wood.
