Title: pics- new 2nd oak bow from stave
Post by: Ryan_Gill_HuntPrimitive on May 28, 2008, 09:00:31 pm
here is the sister bow to the oak bow listed a couple days ago.
also from a southern red oak stave not a board.
unbacked, 63" ntn   about 60# @ 27"
limbs are 1 3\4 wide and fade to just under 3\8 tips
antiqued leather grip (antiqued with black walnut hull stain) tips are black walnut
this one took maybe 1 1\2 of set, but it shoots great. quite fast for a selfbow of this weight.  i have been pleased with the oak so far, i personally consider it better wood then hickory. very smooth to draw.  very little stack, just a slight hint of hand shock, but its real slight. --- a real contender for a deer hunt, for sure.     i may consider letting this one go too, but i dunno, i might get attached to this one.
i enjoy your kind words, thanks for looking- Ryan

also, a note for oldbow i have a few bows already posted this month, if you dont want the extra work of adding them into the BOM, dont feel obligated to add all of them in or you can add them together, whatever you decide is easier for you. i dont want to give you more work load  ;D     i dont really consider any of these to be top contenders- thanks, Ryan

Ryan, I'm real impressed with what you are doing with this local oak.

Another fine looking weapon. I've never made an oak bow so far, but with that inspiration, I may have to start looking for a stave.

I did not think a oak bow could look that good. Nice work.

Like that back, looks like some of the cambium still on there. Wish the bugs hadn't got the rest of the oak I brought home. Nice simple bow!!

Excellent bow- another one! Looks like a real hunting weapon.

I'm still convinced oak is one of the best bow woods in NA- and you're helping me prove it ;D!

yups its cambium. it comes off pretty easy but i like what it adds to the bow so i like to leave it in the low spots.  i cure the oak with the bark on and then it pops off relatively easy, especially compared to elm, black cherry or hickory. then i scrap the thicker remaing cambium down to to bare wood leaving it where the scraper doesnt reach. it scrapes off easy, kinda  like a burned cookie.

I agree with Keenan, you definatly got something going there, That wood looks beautifull !.....only thing, I would consider rounding those edges considerably, otherwise excellent work you're putting out
