Title: Me and BJ
Post by: Selfbowman on February 10, 2025, 03:52:14 pm
Me and BJ are building a flight bow together. I gave up on the high crown that Willie and I was building to the computer design because of the crown. So BJ and I are going old school on it. We decided to try something different we’ve never done. We are trying to match the belly to the crown on the back. Making the back and belly crowns as close as possible. 62” long 2-3/4” wide at the fades 8”handle.

We are making pretty good progress. We have been tag team working on this one. It’s the hardest piece of Osage I have ever scraped.

We have it to low brace now, but the ladies want to get something to eat now and I didn’t get any pictures on the tree. Think we are going to stay another day yet and hopefully finish this one up tomorrow

So are you making the belly concave for an even limb thickness (hollow limb) or convex to match the back?

The opposite of hollow limb Bob . I think thats convex if I remember my $20 words correctly.

We’re hoping to have three growth rings on peak of belly

It’s an experiment Arvin wants to test.

Looking forward to the results...I just don't see how it could be better than a flat belly...

It might not be Bob. But neither of us have ever tried it so we thought it might be a good experiment.

Arvin has a theory that a bow with Three growth rings might be best. One for tension, one for core and one for compression. With two early wood rings for shear.

It kinda makes sense to me so we figured we would give it a go.

It’s a light rain here again this morning. Probably not going to be able to shoot any holes in the sky again today. Hopefully we can finish tillering this bow though

We got pretty much everything that isn’t a bow removed. At least as far as tillering goes.

Time to work on the handle

Wow...that is a beautiful tiller.   :OK   I thought about it and I could see how it might be good to have a single growth ring for the belly as well as the back...cool idea and it will be fun to see the results.

Hey Arvin

if you havent done anything else with that 2.7 inch wide high crowned stave, I posted some thicknesses that should work in the fiight bow thread.

Bob BJ and I finished that bow while he was here visiting. I have not testers it yet . It ended up a bit more narrow than original.

I must have been thinking of another stave you mentioned.

How wide? A pic of the back profile would be nice and a pic showing the belly crown would be cool too.
If you have a moment could you measure thicknesses every 2" also? it would be nice to connect your finished dimensions  to http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,72997.0.html for reference.

Arvin, I know that you two had a great time.  It will be interesting to see how that bow does.   (SH)

This is a great example of the tiller that Tim Baker describes in the design an performance chapter of Volume 4. Bound to be a screamer.
